Inventor 2023 - Slow/delayed when trying to rotate model

When I'm working in a part or assembly, usually an assembly, I get a delay from when I've zoomed to when I'm allowed to rotate my view. Inventor literally locks up, gives no indication that it's doing anything; then, after a delay, it unlocks, allows me to click on things again, and I can rotate normally. This only started happening after the upgrade to 2023. I've installed all available updates to 2023 as well.

This one is frustrating because while it's reproduceable, it doesn't seem to be consistent. I've watched my system resources and there isn't a spike in CPU% when it happens, so I don't think the software is struggling to compute anything. That being said, I've noticed the length of the delay is relative to the size of the assembly. A smaller assembly might only pause for 3-4 seconds, while larger assemblies can stall for excruciatingly long times of 30+ seconds.

Has anyone else experienced this issue?

What are your computer specifications including, CPU, amount of RAM, GPU RAM and Graphics Card(s). Sounds like your computer might not be able to handle the application. Also how complex is the model? Is the file a part or assembly? Complicated assembly files will bog down your computer. I have a beast of a machine and complex models bog mine down.

I've been using Inventor for 8 years, so I'm used to the normal slow downs related to file complexity and work station inadequacies, but this isn't that. Nothing else on my system shows any signs of a decrease in resources when this happens, and as soon as the lock up is over, Inventor runs just as it should. I can even do the exact same steps and the lock up won't happen the next time, but then 3 times later, it might happen again.

All that being said, my system is in line to get replaced within the next few months, then I'll be able to know for sure if it changes anything.

I seems like your delay is long so this many not be your answer but ...

Are you using a 3Dconnexion mouse? If so, are you in "dominant" mode where only one type of motion (pan, rotate, zoom) is allowed at once. If Dominant mode is set, remove it.

2nd, are your 3Dconnecion drivers the latest available?

Thanks for the advice, but no, I'm not using a 3Dconnexion mouse. I prefer having one hand on the keyboard, gamer habit.

Inventor does have an option to Simplify an assembly model, maybe that might help. I have never used it so I do not know the steps or what it does to the actual model. This might be something to look at.

What type of hard drive do you have? A mechanical drive or an SSD? I know we have had issues with both when they start to fail it causes applications to act stupid like what your describing. Have you monitored the drive status when this is happening? We had a glitch a few months ago where all of our workstations had 100% Hard drive usage and it slowed us down to a dead stop. It ended up being our backup software Acronis which had a free file protection mode that was causing the issue once we disabled the file protection the issue was solved.

Even a faulty stick of RAM could be causing your issue, it does fail from time to time. Not only do I manage our Engineering department I also manage our IT department and fix those issues as well. This is not very common but it does happen. The fact that it is intermittent points to something that is starting to fail. When all the right things happen it can't function and it starts causing your issue. I think yo may find the solution once the faulty component fails completely, hopefully you get a new machine before then.

Is there anything else that you may have left out, maybe do a video capture of the issue and post it on here so we can see exactly what it is doing.

I appreciate the thought process there, and I'm with you on all that. I'll wait until my system is replaced to worry about it any further. It's bothersome, but I can live with it until then.

I'll update after the hardware's been ruled out.

Hi! The behavior could be graphics related. Please make sure all critical Windows updates are installed and the graphics driver is updated (make sure the dedicated graphics card is used to run Inventor). Here are a few questions that I need help answer.

Which release did you upgrade from?

Where do you store Appearance and Material Library? What about \Design Data\?

Where do you access the files (local or shared network drive or cloud drive)?

Do you run Inventor as Admin?

Yeah, the OS and drivers are up to date. I upgraded from 2022. All libraries and Design Data folders are Vaulted and accessed locally from the C:\_Vault\ folder. We do not run Inventor as Admin.

Attached my experience with 2023

Loading 70k+ assembly
zoom rotate pan
ram drasitcally increases
after that graphiccard is mostly under full load
there are a lot hangs/glitches when doing that where whether cpu, ram nor graphics is under full load
sometimes inventor crashes!

These freezers are also when only one station with 4500 parts ist opened (see video) This i have definitly not experienced in Inventor 2020!

Yes, the video above shows exactly what I'm talking about. You can see it clearly starting at 8:23. They finish rotating their view, then they're trying to reposition their mouse to rotate again, but Inventor is unresponsive. You can tell, because the mouse is moving around, but nothing is pre-highlighting. My models are nowhere near as complex as these, and this still happens. Like they said, this didn't happen before version 2023.

Thanks for your continued interest, but Inventor doesn't crash when this happens. It randomly locks up for a bit, then returns to normal. There won't be any reports to look at.

Actually, now that I'm thinking about it, since upgrading to 2023, Inventor doesn't pop up the window prompting to send a report after it crashes anymore. It just closes and that's it.

No, not solved. We just need to continue to let them know it's a problem, so that (hopefully) they'll figure out what's wrong and fix it.
