hemming a curved surface

Hello..

I wonder how can I use hem feature on curved surface so I can make a metal part like that..

considering that: I am using it as sheet metal, so I need to unfold it later.

I have tried sweep feature but it's not working with sheet metal features.

Hi! Lucas is right. For the straight segments, you may use Contour Flange command. For the bent segments, you will need to use Contour Roll.

It is possible. But not with the Hem feature.

Here is a model in IV2020 format. It can be done neater, of course. I was just trying different approaches in it.

Did you try making it without the Hem, then Unfold it, then add the Hem, and then Refold it?

I know IV2010 won't do it either.

It hems only the flat segments one edge at a time.

Totally worthless!

But I was hoping the newer versions worked.

Otherwise, the way you did it is the way I would have done it.

You make the profile and then keep using it all the way around with ContourBend.

Then to fabricate the part, you make the hem along the edges of the flat sheet before roll forming.

I wonder how the hem would deform during rolling?

What kind of special method would be used to keep it from deforming?

Hi Chris,

I don't think there should be an issue with rolling the part up. To support the hem - I would roll it up together with the filler plate. Inserted in between the opposite hems. But then again - it is trial and error type of work. To start with anyway.

I wouldn't call it a "brilliant solution", of course. But at least - it gives you some sort of direction how to deal with such a design. 🙂
