Hi all. Is it possible to create an assembly file that contains all of the parts made instead of all part files being referenced to an assembly?

Or also to create parts within an assembly as opposed to creating an .ipt each time? I know this 'all in one' file is available in Solidworks but can't find a way in inventor??

No, an assembly is only ever a container. The only features you can create in an assembly is to cut away material.

Your only option for doing all parts into an assembly is to derive it, at which point your assembly becomes a single part file with multiple bodies in it.

What is your reason for wanting to do this?

Hi! Inventor is a distributed CAD system. There are no internal components except when the file is imported as a Reference Link (AnyCAD). I know SWX supports internal components. If that is a desirable behavior, I suggest you look into Fusion 360. It offers very flexible modeling workflows. All components can be defined within one design. Also, it has dedicated mesh modeling environment, generative environment, and more.

Many thanks!

The strange thing I have is that I have an imported truck model from either .step or .JT (can't remember which) and I have an assembly file that is 2gb now. I've copied it over to a coworkers computer so he has none of the referenced files but the file still opens the truck is there?

You will need to Attach example files here to illustrate the issue.

I suspect that I know the source of the confusion - but it could be one of a couple alternatives.

Can you zip and Attach this here?

It is going to come down to base solids.

Hi! I bet there is a mesh in it. JT file can contain Brep and Mesh. You can see the model with just Mesh data but you probably won't be able to locate components in the assembly.

Many thanks!
