I'm a little confused why you're "teaching" time monopolizing things to students an employer would never want to pay you to draw. I frequently design items with roller bearings, and I guarantee no one wants me wasting time on ball bearings or gear teeth.

DRAWING: standardised drawings by adding 2D sketches over Views from 3D-Model

Hi there,

as I work as a teacher, it is important to me that the drawings I produce conform to standards.
For example, the rolling elements of rolling bearings or the teeth of gearwheels are not cut in accordance with standards.

I am currently trying to implement this by overlaying a model view (section) with a ‘manually created’ 2D sketch. I draw the rolling elements and the teeth of gears based on the existing ‘3D geometries’ of the view and fill the corresponding areas with a solid white fill.

This often leads to the problem that either the filling is not displayed cleanly or the line width of the elements is not displayed correctly.

Is this a bug in Inventor or can the layers be reorganised - similar to drawing programs - so that the 2D sketch is always displayed at the top?

Thank you in advance for your help and I wish you all a peaceful New Year.

Hi! I could be wrong but I think there should be a better workflow to use than what you are using. If possible, please share an example that you are working on right now. The forum experts can help take a closer look and propose a better workflow.

Many thanks!

Hi

Generally, this is not possible. Adjusting Inventor drawings to standards for gears, bearings, or other standardized elements requires additional work.
But:

Technical standards were created to streamline and speed up 2 things: a) the work of the engineer during creation; b) communication during the reading of the designer's work by other people - e.g. a technologist or an operator.
And at the same time:

3D CAD programs (today actually called CAE programs) were also created and are evolving to speed up engineering work.

I won't go into great slogans about implementing ideas and focusing on inches instead of process. Nope; it's about a simple matter.
The engineering graphics standards for gear wheels were created to avoid the need to draw all the teeth (similarly to the spline grooves).
But 3D CAD does it even faster.
Same (main) goal - different paths.
The problems that were solved by those standards simply do not exist today.

I want to be clear - I am a fan of teaching norms and standards.

They help with communication regarding older projects. But they also teach discipline, rules and familiarity with the world of technology. In my opinion, this is an important process on the path of education.

But if we go back to the source and examine why these norms came into being, we see that they respond to problems that no longer exist.

CAD models and drawings speed up the work much more than the lack of gear teeth on a sheet of paper with ink.

Therefore, dealing with this by the development team would in practice be a step backwards - because it would refer to the previous tools (standards), not the problem (work efficiency).

This paradox results from a simple fact - the development path is not linear. Therefore new answers to productivity needs (CAD systems) are not direct consequences of previous answers (standards)

Hi,
thanks for getting back to my request.

Of course I know that there is a difference between things I'm teaching and the work my stundents do, when working in their company.

But as @kacper.suchomski mentioned it is very important that the students know, "how it should be when working along the given standards". It is the same problem we have with introducing the ISO-GPS-standards. If I would be teach my students to create ISO-GPS-conform drawings, then they would be totally confused, because only a few companies are allready following these standards stricly.

So, to put this in a nutshell.... It is less a moral or economic question and more a matter of technical implementation.

Hence my question as to whether this is possible or not....

Regards

Hi @johnsonshiue,

thanks for answering. I'v added a screenshot of the drawing, I'm acutally working on.

As you can see on the right bearing the "overlay" is ok. On the left and the bearing in the middle the lines are not properly shown. All bearing-modifications are in the same sketch and follow the same properties.

The same effect can be seen on the edge of the gears.

Sometimes the hatching of the spheres below is also shown. In the image, I have deliberately moved the mouse over the component so that you can see this. However, this sometimes happens without the component being selected.

So it would be good to know, if this is an issue of Inventor or whether there is a possibility so that these errors no longer occur.

Regards

Automatically no; manually - yes.

Inventor has all the tools to efficiently draw geometry.
