Wrap Custom Pattern to Sphere

Hello all,

So I've drawn a sphere and after that divided it on 16 equal parts ended up with a surface line the on on the picture. (pic1)

After that I've unwrapped the surface so that I can draw a flat pattern on it. (pic2)

I've drawn the pattern based on the unwrapped surface (pic3)

The question now is, how can I wrap the pattern again so that I can then multiply the shape back again to a sphere?

Is there a better way to achieve this?

Hi! Unfortunately, there is no workflow in Inventor to do that. The "Wrap Around" workflow in Inventor is mainly for cylindrical (or conical) faces.

Hi Brad,

This is a brilliant approach! The Curve on Surface generates the 3D curves on the sphere. But, it is not precisely wrapping from 2D. It should be close enough though.

Regarding the surface trimming, actually there is an easier way to do it. You may use the 3D curves to split the spherical face (Split). Once the Split edge is created, Ruled Surface can help create the surfaces along the split edges.

Thank's for your reply, it's a pity that inventor is not capable of this type of operation.

I've seen the proposed solution but as I mentioned I'm still at 2022 version so I cannot open the file.

I have attached a step through, but I had to break it into 2 separate vids. Hope this helps.

Also where I had mentioned "project to surface" you could also use the "Intersection Curve" by selecting the spline and the face instead. Several ways to do it lol.
