topic Custom drawing view in Inventor Forum

Guys,

I have a part which I want to detail. It is a pipe with hole through it. The model has certain orientation in space.

I want to make custom drawing view, where I'm looking at the pipe from top view and the hole is perpendicular to that view. How can I achieve that in the custom drawing view environment? Thanks

I see two ways to do this. To answer your question, (how to do this in the custom drawing view enviroment) you would have to know the angle at which that hole goes through the part and then use the "Rotate at Angle" command you see in your screen capture.

The second method (which I would personally use) is to just place that view as you have it, right click on the view and hit rotate. You can use the "Rotate View" command to rotate by any angle, or in your case, by selecting an edge and either rotating it clockwise or counterclockwise, until it's either vertical or horizontal depending what you've chosen in the dialog box.

Ok thanks! Indeed can do that.

So if I want to have top view as I've mentioned, I need to align side view by tangent line of the hole and then project the pipe to get top view right?

The way I do it is place a WorkPlane in the part that's perpendicular to the view. Then you use the view command 'Look At' and pick that WorkPlane. Then go to your drawing and place the view using 'Custom'. It should open up to the veiw you just created. If not, then use the view command 'Look At' and then 'OK'.

You can also use that WorkPlane as one of the two planes to measure the angle between 2 views. Then you can make that angle a Parameter to use in your view label. So if you have a pipe that is mitered on both ends but the miters are at non-standard angles, you can show the orientation from the end view as well as add a note to rotate the pipe the amount of degrees to get to the other miter (the note will use the Parameter as the angle). If you want to get fancy, you can make a 3d sketch and create 2 lines that represent the angle and constrain them so they're on the same plane. Then you can add a dimension. That dimension is the Parameter you can use as the angle call-out in your drawing view.

Just place the view as I described (will need to have hidden lines turned on in order to select an edge of the hole) and just project the view that you need from it. After that, you can then delete the original view, suppress it, or even move it off of the sheet if you don't want to actually show it.
