A workaround I used in the past:

Add an internal void feature to the ipart factory. Adjust the size of the void to make the component weight match reality for each member file.

Hello everybody!

I'm having some problems when it comes to mass overwriting.

I am working with a lot of I-parts and I-assemblies where only the outer shell needs to be as close as possible to the real thing. This meas that I have to overwrite the mass most of the times, either in the I-Properties Physical tab (when the same part has different working configurations but the mass is the same for all) or in a custom I-Propertie in the I-Part table and link that to the Mass Physical tab so it displays different masses (where the outer shell it's the same but internal parts affect the mass).

Inside the I-part this works but when I place it in an assembly inventor "forgets" the fact that the mass has been overwrited and displays the real mass of the I-part (if the real mass is 1kg but I overwrited it to 3.5 kg it will display 1Kg). I have tried the "rebuid all" and "update mass" comand but they don't have any effect.

Has anyone an ideea about the way this problem can be solved?

Thank you,

Razvan.

Hi! For iPart/iAssembly, I am not aware of a way to override the mass. The member files are mainly driven by the factory files. The member files (except custom iParts) are not editable. The only way to override it is to break the link to the factory file. Open the member file -> right-click on the table -> Break Link. Then the file will be converted to a regular part/assembly file.

Many thanks!

Hello,
Thank you for your response!
I've been doing what you described in order to have the correct mass, but I thought that someone faced the same problem and had better luck in solving it.
I don't understand why if I have a custom iProperty where I can write different mass values and then link it to the physical mass with a rule (and it works fine in the i-part) when I place the I-part in an assembly it's not working anymore.
So as an conclusion if you need the mass of an assembly you can forget about working with I-parts.

I just found this problem as well. I have a purchased item with two variations, each with their own mass specified by our vendor. I have the purchased item set up as an iAssembly which has an iPart for the portion that is variable. However, after I have everything configured I find that I cannot get the weights of the final product to behave correctly. What's the point of having independent iProperties for each member (including model states) but not allow the mass to be table driven?

I guess I'll have to go back down into the purchased item and create separate parts that have overridden masses that will control the entire assembly weight which I can then toggle for each configuration. Couple this with the need to apply a mass of 0 for each of the other components, a complete waste of time for something that should be available in the first place.

I see this is an issue from 2022, has this been addresses in the latest version of Inventor? I have an iAssembly that displays the outer representation but the weight is incorrect since the internals are removed. I need the members to be linked to the parent file (what's the point of an iPart/iAssembly if its not...) for this to work in my application. if this hasn't been looked into, why can this be a table option under the "properties" tab under "physical" so you can link the mass override. Help us out here Autodesk. it cant be that hard....
