A workaround to gain control might be:
Start a new part.
Import the STEP assembly into this part.
Use the "Make components" command to export individual solids.

That should give you the option to save the parts to where you want them, but you do get an extra file for the "base" import....

Greetings all,

Maybe someone can help me with the following?

Trying to create a new assembly out of a certain number of *.step files. These step files are already assemblies.

The goal is to save them into one *iam containing several subassemblies and all single parts, to extract the information how many unique single parts are used in all *.step assemblies.

But when saving the *.iam, I have no possibility to affect the *.ipt saving path?

Attached the screenshot of the situation.

Thank you

Only input for location i know of when importing STEP files is here:

You have to set that at import.

Hi -niels-

Thanks for the help, yes, this should be the *.step file location, and that would be the location where I want to save all, but for some reason, the *.ipt files are being saved to a location Inventor used for saving some of the previous files (also "decided" by Inventor). I have no influence 😞

Hi! It seems that you are using the Default project, as opposed to a custom project. The file resolution path is based on absolute path. I am not sure if Inventor dictates the folder path. It should be where the files are located to begin with.

Maybe I misunderstood the issue. Please share an example that exhibits the behavior.

Many thanks!

Hi! I could be wrong but the Save dialog indicates that the file path is outside of the project path (paths marked in red). As a result, the individual ipt files are being saved to the same folder as the STEP file. Are you using a custom project? Where is the \Workspace\?

Many thanks!

Hi,

The problem is exactly the file path outside of the project path. I am trying to save the new *.iam into the same folder as the *.STEP files, but the *.ipt files do not get saved into this folder, but (if I see it correctly) into a folder used previously (last session). Even opening and saving one random *ipt file from one of these *.STEP files into the desired location does not help.

Thank you

I am using the default project, no custom projects have been created, I just simply create a new assembly and insert all the needed *.STEP files inside.

Inventor uses the Project file to understand the path to the design files.

I'd edit/create a Project file that is scoped to include all directories that hold design files. Use that project file when importing your STP files. Use your normal one when you don't need access to the imported files.
