Corrupt drawing reverts to blank template

Hello Autodesk Community!

I have a user who is experiencing a strange issue with Inventor 2023.1.

The short version is that after an Inventor crash the drawing he was currently working on becomes corrupt.

When opening the file all work is apparently lost and the drawing as apparently reverted back to blank template.

NOT the template used to originally create the drawing but rather the Inventor default Standard.dwg.

When trying to open the iProperties for this file it gives a file-read error of some sort.

it is also impossible to recover an Oldversion (except copying it manually) because Inventor considers the current version unreadable in this context.

So far it has happened twice and affected 3 files. The first time the crash occurred when adding a new sheet to an existing drawing and the second time merely by clicking the update icon on another existing drawing.

Anyone experienced anything similar?

Hi Jakob,

The behaviors don't sound correct to me. Please make sure the custom Styles Library (\Design Data\) has been migrated to the 2023. Where do you store the Inventor files? A local drive, a network shared drive, or a cloud drive? Is this about idw or dwg files?

Hi Johnson,

I believe that the Style Library has been migrated, but I'm not 100% sure on that one. But if it wasn't, wouldn't all users have this problem?

Our setup looks like this:

We use Vault Basic, the vault workspace folder is mapped locally.

A single .ipj for the entire company, enforced by Vault.

All 'Design Data' as well as the Templates are stored on a Shared Network Drive.

This is mainly about .dwg-files. I haven't checked with .idw-files since we don't, generally, use them.

We have also witnessed this behaviour! Upgraded to 2023 a few weeks ago, using vault and exclusively dwg files.

Hard to pinpoint why it happens, but as @jakob_sallstrom says, the only way to recover was to manually replace the dwg file with a backup from OldVersions. Will keep an eye out if it happens again and upload any corrupt files.

Just curious @jakob_sallstrom, did you see any errors like this as well? "The database could not be opened"

I can report I have seen one instance of this as well. Also, could not get the user to repeat any process to cause the corruption on demand.

For them, when Inventor crashes and the DWG becomes corrupt, it then tries to open in AutoCAD but fails.

I had assumed it was an external addon or iLogic causing their problem but now that I see this there maybe something else going on.

Be interested to get more info.

It has happened again... and for another user who was made aware of the problem and contacted me before proceeding. So I have now collected an Report ID and some files for you @johnsonshiue if that can share some light on the situation.

We also had a case from Monday, didn't get the files unfortunately. Error report ID: 332746772.

Just wanted to let you guys know that @johnsonshiue told me that it was a known issue that had been solved internally and will be in 2023.2.

So we're patiently awaiting the release of said patch. 🙂

Please share the example or the workflow that illustrates the behavior. I am not aware of a workflow to reproduce it on more recent Inventor.

I do not know how to go about recreating it, and cannot share any file on what I was working on because under NDA. However, I am working on a drawing packet that is and overview drawing around 40 pages, had been doing saves all day. I went to do a save and it crashed. Upon opening it it was just a blank version of the template and just a single page. There was no error dialogue box upon the crash, but there was nothing in task manger so definitely a crash.

Yeah, I've been experiencing this once-in-a-while recently. Last week, I was able to reboot and it "magically" fixed itself; but not today, this is what I see in what was once a B size detailed part drawing:

When I did a "restore" from old versions, it displayed correctly, but when I clicked Save, it gave me this (screenshot below). It will work if I do a Save As and save it to something else temporarily, and then rename it back to original.

Another clue today. I moved that "Standard.dwg" outside of my project file, and got this error. However, my project file is set to look at the templates on our shared network drive, not the default location shown (which is probably correct when you install and use Inventor locally). Just thought I'd share this (now I will restore from Old Versions as stated above in this thread)...

Its happened to me twice in the last couple of week in 2023.5. We only recently upgraded to 2023 and still getting the vault server migrated, which I thought might have been causing the issue, but seems it is a more common problem. Is this something that also happens in 2024? If not I might see about upgrading 1 more version (just need to check comparability with our CAM software)

It happend also to me when I tried to save the drawing inventor froze and when I reopened it, the empty "Standard" template appeared.

Has any solution been found for this issue ?
