When attempting to replace an ipn model in a drawing, then the model just disappears completely, on the drawing as well as in the tree ribbon. I have double checked this with other ipn files in a drawing, same thing.

What version of Inventor are you using? Can you zip up and post an example assembly/presentation/drawing?

I'm using Inventor 2023 Pro.

All you need to do is place an ipn model in a drawing, then attempt to replace it via "Replace Model Reference" with another ipn model. Once you have selected the model and clicked on all the "Okay's" the ipn model doesn't get replaced, but just disappears entirely.

I was hoping you could do the work once so that others that might be interested in helping out wouldn't have to each create their own assemblies, presentations, etc. It will be a while until I have time to do so.

Hi! It sounds very similar to a legacy defect INVGEN-13692 (aka INVGEN-17155). The comments in the defect indicate that it is not a supported workflow, depending on how the ipn is created. To resolve the issue, it will require a small project, not a bug fix unfortunately. It sounds like a limitation to me.

I guess the only workaround is to create the drawing view based on the new ipn instead of using Replace Model Reference.

Many thanks!

Yes, the only workaround is to remove the old model and insert the new one. It becomes a hassle when I have to try and get the orientation view the same as the older ipn model, and redo anything linked to that model, such as notes, dimensions, sketches, ect.

Unfortunately I can't share the files, as they are classified company property design files. I am busy with the production assembly instructions for these products, and there are varies configurations in the series, with a few differences. So it is easier to copy an existing assembly manual, rename it, and replace the models for a given configuration, rather than creating a manual from scratch. The replace model reference does what it is supposed to do, except when it comes to ipn models.

The assumption is that the .ipn file (not a model) is in a view that can be easily replicated. I just figured out this issue, deleted my view, made the new one completely with the balloons in 10 minutes. While this limiter is not convenient, it is really not much of a game breaker... I am Inventor Forever!

I have the same trouble with .ipn views in drawings. Even a simple change like rotating the .ipn to get a more useful view & creating a new snapshot does not translate to the drawing. In the drawing, view-edit does not allow you to select the new snapshot, you end up having to delete & re-insert the view, losing any attached notes or balloons in the process.

At this point the best thing to do is drive or modify constraints in our views instead of IPN within Drawings. I have stripped my Drawing packages of them completely and updating fine now!
