Frame generator cut list - angle of cutting

Hello,

I'm having trouble quoting the cutting angle of a frame member, such as a square tube or I-profile....

Suppose a cut at 60°:

If I represent the piece on the drawing, I have the possibility of quoting the angle of the extremity, ie 60°, or its supplementary ie 130°.

The value of the "CUTDETAIL1" property suggests 60°.

BUT AT THE MACHINE TOOL, THE ANGLE THAT THE OPERATOR MUST SET ON THE SAW IS THE COMPLEMENTARY 30°!!

First of all, I'm looking for a dimensioning method that doesn't waste too much time on each single end.

It could also be okay to edit the additional dimension 130°-90° so as to obtain a 60°..... but keeping the 130° parametric part so as to be able to absorb any small changes in a second phase.

Secondly, one could think of a "cut list" table where only the angles needed to set the machine to the desired cut are highlighted.

Thanks for your help.

Hi, I've the same problem and I resorted to doing a sketch on the part in different line style and color. Can get fairly quick with practice but not ideal. No more mistakes by the guys using the saw though.

It's not quite as simple as it looks - especially when you have compound cuts and previously deleted cuts.

Take a look over here on the customisation forum: https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/inventor-ilogic-and-vb-net-forum/frame-generator-miter-and-cut-detail-customized-bom/m-p/8895457#M99289

In all the years doing structural details, I never relied on anything but making a detail of each single part that had miter cuts or copes/blocking. The reason is b/c the software isn't designed to do structural detailing. My advice to you is, make a VB.Net macro that automatically puts 3 views on a drawing sheet, one part at a time, until it fills the sheet, then it opens another sheet and does the same thing until all parts are on the sheets. Then go back to each sheet and add dimensions to every part as desired. I would get the coder to make sure he sorts the parts by structural shape, so all angles, tubes, flat bars, beams, pipes, etc. are grouped together in descending order, or that all parts are laid out on the sheets in MARK # order (regardless of structural shape). I realize that this is a monumental task, one which I attempted, but due to lack of coding skills, I quit trying after about 100 hours of futile work. 😞

I believe that this functionality should be an integral part of the software.

Incidentally, the reason I wouldn't use the advice that @pcrawley offers (which is good advice) is b/c the detailed members might have miters at various angles to each other on both ends, which can't be shown in the BOM cut angle description. Using only the BOM, how is the saw operator supposed to know how to rotate a pipe or rec. tube so he miters the ends correctly?

Hi everyone;

thanks to @cadman777 for his contribute.

I agree 100% that a table would not satisfy all the cases. So the big efford to make it work could cover only 30% of cuts that can be done. Possibility to have members that might have miters at various angles to each other on both ends is very common.

Also a matter of good explanation to the saw operator, a drawing of the piece to cut is always the best option.

Create a macro to put 3 views on each member i see very hard to implementate.

In my case, and maybe in lot of cases of our colleagues that read this post, we don't have hundreds of mebers to put in table. We have 5-10, max 20 pieces. There is no need to complicate too much.

I would like to focus on the possibility to quote the cut angle as show in the picture on previouis messages, without make any reference line on sketch for the quote.

Because do this for every cut is very annoing,

Thanks to all

This is a great discussion - and the link from @kacper.suchomski for the customisation is a good one thanks.

BUT be very careful because it always assumes "CUTDETAIL1" is the angle you want to fix. The customisation doesn't allow for a "CUTDETAIL2", so a second cut will get missed (or worse, it'll report the wrong angle).

The other problem with using "CUTDETAIL" is that it adds a property for every cut. If you delete a cut, it does not delete the iProperty. This is a screenshot of a part with one cut, but I deleted the first two cuts, then cut it a third time. You can edit the customisation to accommodate other cuts, but which cut(s) are the correct cut(s)?

If it really is as simple as one cut - and you never delete it or make a second cut, then the iLogic idea is a good one, but I wouldn't like to rely on it. As much as I hate to give up trying to make this work, so far, I haven't found a reliable method - so I totally agree with @cadman777 - make a drawing.
