How do I stop Inventor from using "Save As"? I simply want to write over the file when I tell it to save.

I have inventor 2023. When I go to close an assembly or something, it prompts if I want to save changes. I say yes, then it immediately uses the 'save as' prompt. If I say ok, it says it can't write over that file and wants to copy it elsewhere. Can I just have it save over the files when I hit save? I don't want it to ever prompt me with "save as" unless I specifically click on "save as". I just lost 3 hours of work because of errors saving with that prompt.

I just want it to F**king save!

If it goes to "Save As" instead of save, then the file most likely has Read Only properties. If you use File Explorer and go to the file and right click on it:

Select Properties. The following properties dialog should appear.

Simply uncheck the Read Only checkbox and then save the file.

If you are using Vault you have to check the file out before editing it, (This toggles the read/write properties of the file)

Then, following on the other suggestions, you have "borrowed" files from someone else using vault - this will cause the files to be marked as read-only - or for whatever other reason the files in question are set to read only. If you are trying to saveas to a filename that is already placed in your assembly, and the file is open in the assembly, you will also get this result. If you are certain you want to overwrite that file, then close the assembly and file, and do the saveas again, with nothing else open. There are very few, but very specific reasons why you end up at "save copy as" when you explicitly want to "saveas".

Oh snap! I forgot that when you are working in an assembly, and have the ability to do part editing within an assembly, you can in fact open subassemblies, edit them, and try to save them, but some cross-part association will prevent you from doing the saveas, and sending you the result you are experiencing. These are all new files that I generate, no file sharing at all. No files are read only. Previous versions of Inventor (I go back to 2008) did not do this. It has only started in later releases. I am simply closing an assembly, the system asks if I want to save changes. Instead of just saving files whether they are changed or not, it brings up the 'save as' dialog. Even if I were to try and overwrite the same file, it is denied. And if I cancel in order to continue, it's happened a couple times where my changes did not save. I simply DO NOT want Inventor to Ever bring that dialog up for any reason what so ever when saving. If I want to save as, I will use the save as dialog. I'm not sure why this is so difficult for the system to do. As stated, older versions did not do this. Very frustrating.....

This means Windows tell IV the file is lock or open somewhere else.

Are your files on Cloud Drive or Network Drive?

You may be on to something there. I do have DropBox running in the background. My files are local but DropBox is constantly updating them to the cloud. I wonder if I turn the services off while I am working if this will stop the SaveAs dialog from appearing......

I will give this a try.

When DropBox or any cloud sync, they first lock the file.

When IV save files, it create a few temp files. Which cloud will try to sync them and lock them up.

Hence, not a good idea to use cloud.

Unless you can set it to sync at the end of the day.
