Invalid axis / origin

When I get an error on a sketch it is usually some lost projected lines or invalid axis/origin.

My habit is to RMB the sketch, recover, to get some info about the error.

So if I see that the problem is Invalid Axis/origin, I know it is easy to fix by redefine or edit coordinate system.

But for some reason, the recover insists to edit the sketch - the only place I cannot repair the issue. Why ???

It has been like this for at least 10 years, so maybe it finally is fixed in 2025 without me knowing it, working in an older version. But I strongly suspect it still isn't fixed.

Do we really need to put it into Idea station and get a bunch of votes to get that annoying thing fixed?

Typically, this is a Naming and Matching defect. I am not aware of a systematic way to reproduce the behavior. If possible, please share an example that illustrates the behavior.

Hi,

Tried to create an example, and find that it is not as easy as it used to be. It seems that some programming efforts are made to reduce the problem, and for simple designs it is next to impossible to provoke the error. Some kind of automatic repair seems to be performed. Did a quick investigation via API, and found that the reference actually was lost, but somehow the axis directions still was kept.

But I still run into the error in more complex masterparts, but cannot share those openly. So I sent an example to your email.

In this example EOP is pulled to a sketch with invalid axis/origin. If you try recover, you will get the message, and you can OK or cancel, and will be sent to edit the sketch. (at least in IV 2024)

When I get that error the first thing I do is " Redefine " the sketch plane, fixes 50 % of those errors. If that does not fix the problem, edit the sketch and in my case look for the Pink entities and fix them

I agree with @Mario.VanWiechen . Whenever I get the "Invalid Axis/Origin" error, the first step is to "Redefine" the sketch on the plane that it was supposed to be on, then delete any projected geometry and also redefine and redimension it. If the Axis or Origin still requires a definition, then you can select a tangible point or edge to redefine those, and the error goes away.

Hi! Without disclosing the detail of the file Torbjørn shared with me here, I can share the email reply I sent him.

This has something to do with faces/edges not properly tagged. This is a geometry-specific behavior. We will need to look into where the problem is. In the meantime, you may redefine the sketch coordinate to bypass the behavior. Right-click on the sketch in the browser -> Edit Sketch Coordinate -> select the coordinate center -> pick the origin center. Then pick the sketch X axis -> pick the origin X axis -> right-click -> Flip Normal -> Ok. After that the sketch plane should be well-defined.

I think that there is a second issue with the Design Doctor workflow.

Here are my steps:

Design Doctor finds an Invalid axis/origin
User highlights the bad sketch in the model browser
1. This is a key step to trigger the issue.
The user clicks the Red Cross (why is this icon so small? Why not at the start of every ribbon, so the user knows to fix all issues quickly?)
Design Doctor Shows the error
User clicks next

Design Doctor suggests a solution.
User clicks next

Design Doctor says to edit the sketch coordinates
User clicks Finish
Design Doctor enters Sketch Mode.

The user can not edit the coordinate system from the sketch. This is the workflow that I have been frustrated with Inventor since I started using it.
Note: If the user does not click the sketch in the model browser before running Design Doctor, then the Finish button starts the Edit Coordinate System workflow. It took me until today to learn that I should not click on the sketch node before starting the Design Doctor if I wanted get to the Edit Coordinate System command.

Many thanks for highlighting the issue! This is indeed a Design Doctor bug. This doctor has not been "recertified" ever since it became a doctor. I guess the assumption was that all sketching related remedy needed to be done within sketch environment. However, Edit Sketch Coordinate is an exception. It cannot be done within the 2D Sketch environment. I will work with the project team to understand this issue better. But I don't think a quick fix would be possible.
