I was working on an assembly and suddenly it started giving me tons of cross part reference failures and stuff. So I started going through and redoing adaptive features and stuff and noticed that those features refused to update - it'd keep giving me the same errors and telling me to fix them again. I hit save and closed the file and when I reopened it I got the above error and the file won't open. I rebooted my system and I'm still getting the same error. I can open up the few of the subassemblies that I've tried no problem. Any ideas?

Ok so I was able to open it by clicking the three dots and clicking "open with options" then changing "Design View" from "Last Active" to "[Primary]" I think something went goofy with that view...

It's opened but still giving me all sorts of cross part errors that don't actually exist. This was the initial issue that came out of nowhere. None of these errors should be errors and never have been errors previously.

It seems like the references are getting messed up and not working properly. If I go to recover any of these and delete the pink broken link and redo it with "Project Geometry" the reference geometry in question is purple for full constrain instead of yellow for reference.

For instance in this sheet metal part I have a cutout that's referenced off of part of the frame assembly. You can see the reference geometry in the top right while it's supposed to be located down on the line highlighted in green. No matter how many times I delete and redo this sketch is moves and throws errors.

Here's what I get when I open the part on its own. This image shows where the cut is supposed to be and always has been:

This however is where the sketch keeps moving to:

It seems sheet metal related as all of the cross part errors involve sheet metal parts. Ever panel has holes and the threaded mounting holes in the frame are adaptive/referenced to the sheet metal panel holes. Every error has been with those - panels have 1 of the 3 references working properly so I delete and redo the other two and they're purple instead of green.

Hi Will,

It is very hard to understand the issue without seeing the actual files. Based on my past experience, the Cross-Part Projection Error is usually related to missing source geometry or the components are not in the place where the adaptive relationship was established.

Please share the files in zip here. I would like to understand it better.

Many thanks!

@johnsonshiue I've already deleted all the adaptive features and rebuilt them. This happens randomly and has happened even on Inventor 2015 before we upgraded to 2023 and now 2024. I can work with a file 100% normally one day and the next it seems every single adaptive feature is throwing some kind of error. I've had assemblies that it was easier to just make an entirely new assembly than to try to spend the time fixing whatever decided to break.

Hi Will,

You may want to make sure there is a logical grounded part in the assembly. Without the grounded part, though all components could be moved freely but subtle change can lead to drastic movement.

Many thanks!

The main assembly is the steel frame and that part is grounded in the overall assembly and everything else is mated to that assembly.
