Hi guys, I was wondering if you know anything about a future development of Inventor with potential artificial intelligence. Let me explain better: it would be a dream to “dictate” to the software that I would like to install a pump along a pipe to bring the liquid from level 0 to 12 meters in height and that the software itself prepares a pump with suitable characteristics. Obviously asking me the temperature of the liquid, type of liquid, connection to the pipe… What do you think? Too much imagination? Thanks.

Hello! This is certainly an interesting topic these days, and people have opinions ranging from "This is awesome; when can I get started?!" to "OMG, Skynet!!!". 🤣

I can't speak for anything official that might be coming in the future (for that kind of discussion, you'd need to join the Feedback Community). But... THIS was spotted on LinkedIn the other day and could be a preview of some possibilities down the road. Autodesk did not produce this video, nor is it anything officially endorsed by Autodesk.... it is shared here strictly for entertainment purposes.

I have already used iLogic code created from scratch by chatGPT.

This in a few years will change all in the design field.

Hi! This integration was done by a user, not by Autodesk. ChatGPT and other AI tools are very interesting. It does open many opportunities. As Matteo mentioned, it could create interesting working iLogic rule (but it can fail miserably too). Whether or not it can change the mechanical design field remains to be seen. At the moment, it is capable of providing an opinion for a given question. As a user, you will need to find out if the answer is helpful. At the moment, the accuracy and relevancy still have room for improvement. What I can see in the immediate future is that it may enhance or replace the traditional web search. The information it provides is much more efficient and compact than a simple search result.

To fully leverage the power of AI, not only the AI needs to talk to the CAD tools but also the CAD tools need to be able to work with AI bidirectionally. I don't think the traditional CAD tools were designed to do that. In the foreseeable future, I think AI will help facilitate problem solving and information sharing on design. It will be more like a live dictionary (library) to assist designers. The next step will be participating in design process more proactively, which may require some fundamental change in the CAD tools.

Mechanical design are more on rules and math.

Current AI are not really trained on those.

It is possible to train one to do that.

The AI need to be hosted on a server. Your computer at home won't do.

So it is possible but user will need to connect to the AI.

Right now, the line up to ChatGPT is long.

Not agree.

Mech design is math, but it's standard and typical design, with a great database and a learning path, AI can totally reproduce design (for example drawing) all done.

Fusion can do job based on cloud/server (simulation, generative design, etc), and math for these are quite big and complex. Ai for MFG is not so far. The quickest will take it all (as Autocad did).

AI are trained on data set.

They can't really think outside the data set.

I don't think anyone has train AI on Mech Design yet.

I didn't say it's not possible.

Generative is a small set for Mech Design.

The pipe example from OP is too simple for AI.

It's more logic problem.

A simple table and some equation will do.

Could be done with iLogic.

Hi! I had a few attempts to ask ChatGPT to write an Inventor iLogic rule. It is hit or miss. In some cases, it creates beautiful concise rules. In other cases, the rules simply are wrong. There is a lot of work to be done.

This workflow is indeed available on Fusion, not on Inventor. You may link Inventor models to Fusion and create automatic drawings there.

How does it come that this is available in Fusion and not in Inventor?
Makes no sense to me since Inventor is supposed to be a more advanced software.

This is very likely. I have already successfully controlled 106 Inventor commands using natural language, which is basically all Inventor commands. If we use AI to add engineering analysis and precise language commands, it is very likely that we can achieve this.
