How to suppress/disable "The data format of the following files was migrated..." warning in Inventor Read-only Mode?

We recently upgraded our environment from Inventor 2023 to 2026.

Whenever users open older files via Inventor Read-only Mode, the following warning prompt pops up:

"The data format of the following files was migrated to the current release of Autodesk Inventor; failures which occurred while updating the data are listed below. If you save the document, all files will be saved in the current data format and unable to be opened by previous versions of Autodesk Inventor."
We fully understand the implications of file migration and backward compatibility, but in Read-only Mode files aren't being saved anyway.

The pop-up is causing major workflow issues: it often gets hidden behind other active windows, causing users to believe Inventor has frozen while waiting for the model/drawing to load.

Is there an Application Option, registry key, XML config, or command-line switch (/quiet etc.) to permanently suppress or bypass this migration dialog in Read-only Mode?

Hi! Try this and see if it helps. Go to Tools -> App Options -> Save -> Migration -> set it to No -> Ok.

I just tried changing the Migration setting to "No" under Application Options -> Save, but unfortunately it doesn't change anything. The issue is still exactly the same.
It’s very frustrating and a major annoyance in our daily workflow, as it’s blocking us. What is the next step to get to the bottom of this?

Thank you for following up.

I have attached a sample dataset/file that reproduces the behavior.

In our environment, this issue consistently occurs every time our Vault Office users open files (which opens them via Inventor Read-only Mode). Along with the migration prompt, we also see warnings related to styles/Design Data.

Because files cannot and should not be saved when opened through Vault Office / Read-only Mode, having these modal dialogs block the interface—and frequently hide behind other windows—creates severe workflow interruptions for our users.

Please let me know if you are able to reproduce it with the attached file, or if you need any additional logs or environment details.

Hi Johnson,

I think we finally got to the bottom of this issue after quite a bit of troubleshooting.

It turns out the constant migration warnings (along with the "Cannot open XML file" errors for Design Data) were not inherently a bug in Read-only Mode, but rather a conflict with how Vault extracts files and how our project file (.ipj) was configured.

Our observation: In our main .ipj file, the path for Design Data (Styles, etc.) was set to a relative path: .\CAD\Design Data\. When Vault users opened a file in Read-only Mode, Vault extracted the file to a local temporary folder (e.g., C:\TEMP\...). Because the .ipj path was relative, the Read-only viewer assumed the Design Data was located inside that local Temp folder alongside the extracted CAD file. When it couldn't find the XML files there, it threw all those warning prompts and dirtied the file in memory.

The solution:

I opened our .ipj file and changed the Design Data (Styles, etc.) path from the relative .\CAD\Design Data\ to = [Default].
I cleared all local Vault Temp folders on the affected machines to remove any cached view projects.
Now, when Vault opens a file, the Read-only viewer is forced to ignore the relative path and instead reads the absolute path from the machine's local Application Options (C:\Working Folder\CAD\Design Data\).

Since making this change, the migration prompts and XML errors have completely disappeared, and the files open cleanly without freezing the workflow.

Does it make sense to you that a relative path in the .ipj file would cause Read-only Mode to try and read Design Data from the Vault Temp extraction folder, thereby triggering these migration/dirty memory prompts?
