Create New File Default Location

Picture attached. Everytime I go to create a new file since getting Inventor 2024, it defaults to the folder en-US with Inventor's default templates. I'd like it to default to the highlighted folder "Weber Group" with my personalized templates. How do I do this?

Either change the Template folder path in your project:

Or, if your project is set to use the default location as above, you can alter it in App. Options:

What about setting the default Material? It reset to Generic, I'd like to set the default to stainless, as that's what we use for most applications. I couldn't find that setting in application options.

Last time I'm going to bug you today @Gabriel_Watson haha.

Now, when I do File > Open > Import CAD Files and select, let's say a 3D Step file from McMaster-Carr, it defaults to Generic material as well. How do I change this default to stainless as well?

No worries.
Imports will (blindly) consume your "Standard.ipt" and "Standard.iam" files under the root folder of the default template path. So you will need to open those separately and save the doc settings change we talked about above (maybe keep a copy of the originals).

So I just opened up all (part, assembly, weldment, sheet metal, etc) of the template files that are under my "Weber Group" template folder (which is the set default path now when creating a new file) and changed all of the document settings to what I would like and applied changes then saved all files separately. But, for some reason when I import a file it's still defaulting to "Generic" material.

Nevermind, I figured it out. It was because I was changing the templates in my Weber Group folder, and not the original .ipt and .iam files in the "en-US" folder

Okay so I got a new computer a few weeks ago. I actually deleted the default templates that Inventor gives you when you first download it. Then I replaced them with the templates I've been using in the same "en-US" folder.

It is STILL defaulting to "Generic" material as "Shaded" when I import a CAD file from McMaster, instead of using the "stainless steel" and "shaded with edges" that are in my document settings of the templates in that en-US folder. I literally deleted the original template files, so how is it still defaulting this way?!?? So confused.

Hi! The template files need to be named Standard.ipt or Standard.iam, so that they can be used as the import template files. Please share the file you downloaded from McMaster. I would like to try it on my machine to see if I can reproduce the behavior.

I copied the entire templates folder and zipped it. There's literally only my customized part files in there. I even went as far as to go into the "English", "Metric" and "Old Templates" folders and edited those standard part files document settings, but it's STILL defaulting to generic and shaded. Not sure where it's pulling this template from because there's not even a stand part template with those settings in this folder.

And it's any McMaster part. I've tried several different ones, they all default the same when importing.

Weird, after I copied that folder and renamed it, attached it here, then went back and deleted the copied folder.... now all the sudden it's defaulting to the correct document settings. 🤷‍♂️ Maybe a glitch. Maybe a user error, the world may never know 😅

@johnsonshiue Well, unfortunately it started defaulting to generic and shaded again on it's own.

I tried doing a complete clean uninstall with the help of our IT provider and did a reinstall to get all the original templates/folders back, then I changed all of their document settings to stainless and shaded with edges.

Then I added my personal templates.

And low and behold... it's STILL pulling a default of generic and shaded... No idea where it's pulling this from. Any help is appreciated because this is quite annoying 😅

Maybe related, but since I've started having this issue, now I also have an issue with imported CAD files not being able to be saved after I do a "Save As" command and change the file name.

Hi! The file name plus the path seems too long. It has to be less than 256 characters.
