"Replace Model Reference" always uses the worst view

How can you choose what view is front for "Replace Model Reference" in drawings?

If the model it's replacing is facing front, it will use the top. If it's facing back then it will use the front. If it's facing top then it will use a side.

Changing the 'front' in the model seems to do nothing. Changing the 'home' in the model seems to do nothing. I've played around with the "front view plane" in the drawing (tried both XY plane as "front" and "from model", with no difference.

When picking the new reference "design view" is set to "last active" and this seems to do nothing also, as it will always default to the same as above, even if "front" was last active.

Can you provide an example data set (drawing plus before and after models)? What version of Inventor are you using?

If i set one of the parts to have the 'top' as 'front', and replace references where the primary on the sheet is 'front' then that view will simply be replaced with the 'bottom'. Inventor will not reorientate it so that the 'front' view replaces the 'front' view in the drawing.

Hmm... I replaced Part2 with Part 4 and found that the Top view of Part2 was replaced with the Front view of Part4. This makes sense to me, as I would expect Inventor to maintain the orientation of the origins of the parts relative to each other.

So, it appears that Replace Model Reference ignores direction labels and replaces views with the new model's XYZ axes oriented the same as the original's axes. To me that makes sense.

No, the response didn't.

If the parts are complex enough, the issue remains, regardless of how the models are orientated. I can have two parts that both have the XY+ plane as "front" and model the same from there and if there enough difference in specifics then when replacing one with another, inventor will do as i said originally along with deleting all placed dimensions.

Simple parts will do as @SBix26 described, and i've realized that i cannot give the exact files that i am experiencing with as they are proprietary (and i would guess this limits a lot of discussions here.)

I am not able to share specifics about the .ipts on an open forum.

Hi! Just to share some update on this issue, I did receive the files Alexander shared. Without disclosing the details, I can comment as such. The issue here is about choosing the starting plane. On one part, it was starting from XY plane, while on the other it was starting from XZ plane. The inconsistency causes the ViewCube to orient differently. It is better to have consistent starting plane and ViewCube orientation.

For the view in the drawing TOP, BOTTOM, FRONT ... etc. have no meaning.

View presented on drawings is bases on X,Y,Z of the model.
If your models do not follow the same X,Y,Z / FRONT,TOP, BOTTOM ... they will not replace facing the same way.

You need to keep your model X,Y,Z orientation consistent to replace models without view angle problems.

Some workaround my be to place your assembly in another assembly orientated consistently with your original model you are replacing. Than use this assembly as model for replacement.
