When running the Rebuild All command on assemblies, the Export Status if some derived objects is being turned off.

It happens to me on occasion - usually hundreds of parts need to be opened and have their derived link edited and closed to fix.

To shortcut this tedious & time consuming annoyance I have found that if you deliberately make further changes such as adding additional geometry or altering dimensions to the master part sketch that is no-longer marked for export, then when you rebuild the parent assembly it will often be cleared.

Hi Ed,

I am not aware that Rebuild All can cause an exported object to become not exported. If there is a repeatable workflow, it will be a bug. Please let me know asap.

I guess one possibility is that the export status was not saved back to the derived source file. Although it appears working, the link may have been broken because of lack of the export status. Rebuild All simply reflects the fact.

Please let me know if you have reproducible steps.

Many thanks!

Hi Johnson,

It is not reliably reproducible - you can press rebuild all many time in a row and nothing will happen. I suspect it is some occasional issue related to the read/write availability status of the master part causing derive status flipping- possibly due to using cloud backup software on the inventor project folder (dropbox in my case).

Fortunately if you make large enough changes high enough in the master part model tree then that can 'reset' the derive status in the child parts.

Interestingly this can also solve problems with child parts not updating derived geometry including 'hung' block definitions and the dreaded stuck rebuild 'lightning' symbol on the block definition that can crash inventor if you try and update the child parts directly.

I wonder if it occurs for you when you have pressed rebuild all on a large assembly & windows is still saving files to disk & then you press it again before it finishes? Also if you have the master part open in inventor or have thumbnails being regenerated in windows explorer? It just has the feel of some kind of access limitiation on the file itself causing the frustrating randomness of the problem and thus the inablility to reliably reproduce.

UPDATE: Resolved, but this is very buggy! See below.

I'm getting the message even though the parameters I'm trying to link to from an assembly ARE exported. I've tried all different combinations of enabling & disabling export, opening and closing documents, and using the Parameters window or the Author panel to enable or disable export. I've tried enabling all the User Parameters. I've even closed and reopened Inventor. I tried "Design Doctor" like the messages tells you, but it took me forever to find it because the cross is not red, so I couldn't run it. So in ALL respects, this error message is just wrong. The parameters ARE exported, and I can't run the design doctor. Nothing on Google helped either. They all say things should fix it which don't.

Nothing will let me link to those parameters.

What I finally did is to attempt a Rebuild All, which was not the original cause, since I hadn't done one. But seeing the title of this thread, I tried it in the hopes it would at least let me run Design Doctor. It did. Design Doctor didn't offer a way to fix it, but what it did do was tell me nothing else did: It named the parameters which were not exported. They were NOT in the document I was trying to link to, and I had definitely NOT unexported them or did anything which should have had that effect. I wasn't even doing anything with them when the error message came up.

So, 1. The error message is about something different from what I was doing (a different document, different parameters). 2. The error message gave no information about what objects were involved. 3. The document which did have linked parameters that were unexported did it spontaneously. I had just successfully linked to them a few minutes earlier, and they WERE exported. 4. Design Doctor was unavailable when it was telling me to use it. 5. Design Doctor wouldn't fix it for me.

That's a lot of bugs.

Now that I got the assembly with the parameters linked, I've got a part derived from the assembly. I haven't even linked any parameters from the assembly, and if I go into the screen as if I'm going to, then just OK it, it gives me the same message. But this time, Rebuild All won't make Design Doctor available as it did before. I even went in and exported every single parameter in the assembly. I have no idea what's going on now. I guess it's another bug.

The parts are not recognising the derived connections to the parent.
I find if you copy the parent out of the project as a backup, then make major, but reversible changes to the original parent, you may be able to trigger the child parts to fully update.
It has been this way for 10 years or more
Some form of corruption in file handling is my bet, often worsened by live cloud backup of the directory structure with OneDrive the worst.

Hi Don,

The behavior does not sound right to me. There could be corruption in the derived part or the derived source part. Regardless, the behavior should always be persistent, as long as the change has been saved. If you can reproduce any of the defective behavior, please share the files with me directly at johnson.shiue@autodesk.com. I would like to understand the issues better.

Many thanks!
