External Thread issue in the model and drawing

Hello, I think it is Inventor issue.

Explain:

I make a model with extruded feature diameter 12 mm, and make thread M12.

Everything is good, but if I change extruded feature to diameter 10mm and don't change thread to M10 (forgot to do it), Inventor doesn't make any indication to my error.

For example, if I make on diameter 10 mm thread M8 I receive the attention note from Inventor

And this symbol in the list:

The problem is greater in the drawing:

All dimensions made automatically (without manually changes)

I don't have any indication if my design is wrong, even if I check intersection with a part with hole I will not receive any indication to problem.

How to solve it?

It makes many problem in production process.

This is one of the things that the trained and experienced user has to take responsibility for checking.

Unfortunately it is not automatic.

Manage tab>Rebuild all after making geometry changes for final release.

Check for issues indicated in the browser by i in circle.

It is me, 23 years of Inventor experience, design division's manager and mechanical engineer.

I can make 20-30 models and drawings during the day and start to produce the parts in machine shop.

I make Manage-> Rebuild All - like you recommend - it doesn't help.

For example: you make thread M16 on feature with diameter 10mm, I have attention from Inventor.

If so, It is my responsibility to allow or not it.

But if ONLY for thread M12 on the diameter 10 it is don't work. Other dimension works.

What I need to do???

Are you saying Edit Feature on the Thread doesn't work?

Can you Attach your *.ipt file here?

I say it work incorrect

Please read ALL my explanations above.

I hope you, like trained and experienced Inventor specialist will could solve the problem.

to change extrude feature diameter edit Sketch2 in Extrusion 2

Try to change to thread M12 without to change feature diameter. Inventor will do it. (but is not right)

But if you do the same thing with thread M16 (for exmpl) Inventor will open the window with note about a mistake.

It all what I need - message with error.

Hi Jeffrey,

A quick test part clearly demonstrates what Alex is talking about. Here it is in IV2020 format.

Interestingly enough - Inventor doesn't warn about a problem when the diameter is changed from 12mm down to 10mm. only. Going below 10mm. or above 12mm. triggers the warning message. Rebuild All doesn't have any effect in this particular case.

Even if the extrusion is 10mm Dia. initially - M12 thread still can be applied to the surface. As well as M11. But trying to apply M9 one - and a warning message comes up.
It very well may be an omission on the Inventor side. Which might have been addressed in latest version of IV

Hi Folks,

Based on my limited testing of this workflow, there does seem an internally hard-coded logic to tell if a given external thread spec is suitable for the selected cylindrical face. In this case, M11x0.75 and M12x1.75 are allowed, while M11x0.5 isn't allowed.

It seems that it is based on the min Minor diameter value. When it exceeds the cylindrical diameter, the given spec will not be allowed to use.

I hope - the Inventor team is not suggesting that having M12 thread allocated to Dia.10 rod is an acceptable practice. 🙂
