I moved from Inventor/Vault 2020 to 2022 several months ago. Here is the workflow with Inventor 2020. When I have a main assembly open and then I open a sub assembly in its own window. Make changes and the close the sub assy. When I close this file, Inventor will not ask me if I want to save it. This is controlled by a prompt response under Tools >app options, Prompts tab. I keep the prompt message “The file can be saved from another window. Save it now? “ set to NO and NEVER prompt. Since the sub is part of the assembly file open in the other window, when I close the main assembly, it will then ask me to save the file. This seems to me how it should work.

Now in Inventor 2022, when I have to main assembly and a sub assy open in its own window and I close the sub assembly, Inventor always prompts me to save the sub assembly. Even though I have the same prompt set to NO and Never, it still prompts me to save the file. I don’t think it should since the file is open in another window and I have the prompt response set. To make matters even worse, when I click “Yes” to the save prompt… then it asks if I want to check-in to Vault.. Click, Click, Click……

This seems like a regression to me. Maybe there is a new setting that I have missed. If there is I have not found it.

Thanks,

Kirk

Hi Kirk,

How are you doing? There should be a logical reason to explain the behavior. Or it is a bug. If possible, please share the files in zip with me directly (johnson.shiue@autodesk.com). I would like to understand why the subassembly keeps dirtying itself.

Many thanks!

Johnson,

I have got the sub-assembly to stop wanting to save when I close it and return to my main assembly. Although it no longer asks if I want to save, it still wants to check-in the sub even though it is still open in another window.

Not sure how to make it stop doing this other than changing the Vault prompt "File '{0}' is checked out to you. Do you want to check it in?". If I set this to No and Never prompt, then I will not be prompted when I close the main assembly. I just do not want it to prompt me to check in when I close a sub that is also open in another window.

In 2020, it would not ask me to check in the sub, but it does ask to check-in my main when I close it. The prompt "File '{0}' is checked out to you. Do you want to check it in?" in 2020 was set to "Yes" and "Always Prompt".

Something has changed in 2022 and to me it seems like a regression. Below is a screen capture of what I'm seeing.

Thanks

I see nonstop dirtying with Modelstate file with <STRIKE>2020</STRIKE> <STRIKE>and</STRIKE> 2023.

Check in drawing, assembly got dirty.

Check in assembly, drawing get dirty again.

Switching modelstate will dirty the assembly also.

Hi Frederick,

Model States are available as of 2022 and later. I guess you meant 2022, not 2020. Regardless, the only logical explanation to such behavior is that the Model States were indeed changed or the Model State member docs (mini files) have been generated so that they need to be saved.

Please feel free to share the files in zip that exhibit the unreasonable file save behaviors with me directly johnson.shiue@autodesk.com. I would like to understand the behavior better.

Many thanks!

Johnson,

Any idea why it keeps nagging me to check in the file when I close the window (see message 3 above)?

Hi Kirk,
