Close or disable "Prompted Entry" textbox on drawing/sheet creation

Our standard drawing template has multiple sheets in it, and each sheet has a border and text box with prompted entries. So every time we create a new drawing, we have to hit "ok... ok... ok... ok..." half a dozen times, because we don't yet know or care what those entries will be.

I'm wondering if there is a way to use iLogic or something else to either disable, or automatically close those dialog boxes upon a new drawing creation, or even upon a new sheet creation as well.

I tried creating iLogic that would fill the fields in automatically when a new Drawing document was created, and it worked, but not until AFTER the prompted entry dialog boxes had reared their heads and I'd closed them all. So apparemtly Inventor was asks for those entries before it runs the upon-creating-new-document iLogic rules.

Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!

You could hit escape?

That should cancel each set of prompts.

Our solution was to have the iLogic rule get the prompted entry information, then place the title block and border with the fields filled in. If your template has the borders/title blocks already placed, I don't know of any way to avoid the prompted entries when you start a new drawing.

Try this -

Create an new template with -

have the Title Block in the Drawing Resources of the Template, but not placed on the sheet.

have the Border on the sheet in the Template. (multiple sizes for different sheet sizes)

Create the views on the sheet and then grab the Title Block from the Drawing Resources.

That's not what the OP asked.

Ideally working with multiple sheet you should use Sheet formats.

Create the sheet containing the border, title block and sketch symbols then save it away.

I realize I'm resurrecting an ancient thread, but I decided to revisit this since it still bugs me. I'm attaching a sample drawing that exhibits the annoying behavior. Anytime you create a new sheet, you have to close/escape out of the prompted entry dialog box--twice. Once for the title block and once for the border (both our title block and border contain prompted entries).

This becomes very annoying when trying to create several new sheets at once. And it also becomes very annoying if I have to make a change to the title block or border, because the prompted entry boxes then pop up for every single sheet the first time you activate it after the change.

If there's any way to prevent the prompted entry boxes from appearing, or even use iLogic/VBA to close them after they pop up automatically, that would be very helpful.

Can't you change the properties? In your template it is chosen 'Prompted Entry". If you choose another and click ok in the next "New Sheet" then Prompted Text' won't be asked.

Or do you want to maintain it there?

@Binga, thanks for the suggestion. But it does need to remain a prompted entry because the field's contents can vary from sheet to sheet.

When I manually tell it to That's how I always fill them in. When it's time, I manually open the edit fields box and fill them in. The automatic popping-up is only an unnecessary annoyance.

So, make the changes that I proposed. Then, when you need to fill the fields you enter in the border/other and change the value manually.
Don't forget to save as template.

The only way for a field's contents to vary from sheet to sheet is with prompted entry. (The only other way is to have a unique border/title block on every sheet which is totally impractical).

@SteveMDennis, I know you are knowledgeable about the inner workings of Inventor. Do you have any ideas on how I can prevent the prompted entry boxes from popping up automatically? Any suggestions would be very appreciated!

Can you expound on the what the variance's would be for each sheet?

I would think Author, Checked By, and Title would be the same across all sheets or could easily pull from the Model. What are the Prompted Entries in the Border for?

What I am getting at, is there any reason why the variance couldn't be a model property for the sheet based on first view in?

Hi Everyone,

I didn't read the entire thread, so forgive me if I repeat something or cause "noise"...

I generally avoid prompted entries in favor or iProperties, but just ran into a need to use prompted entry the other day when including scale in the title block, where the scale was different for each sheet, and not tied to a particular view (i.e. Scale = Varies).

With that in mind Adam Nagy provides an option for avoiding the prompt when inserting a new sheet via VBA:

Good question, indeed there is a reason. Two, actually. One, the designer/approver/date modified can vary per sheet, and they're more tied to the drawing than to the component on the drawing. It would just be too confusing having those tied to the first-placed view.

Second, we also use prompted entry for the Sheet Title and sheet identifying number, and use iLogic to grab this info from the actual sheet name in the browser tree. It just makes it easier. With this system, we have a nice "table of contents" in the browser tree but we only have to keep up with that, and not with also filling in the drawing name/number on each individual sheet.

We may revisit how we do things and look into pulling our iProperties from the model sometime in the future, but for the time being our current system works well enough.

Hi,

My response might benefit others though it is an old thread.

Scenario : When you have idw templates with prompted entries in titleblock or border, Inventor automatically pops up the dialog. User intervention is required to dismiss the dialog. Though there are ways to pass in the values to them via the API, the dialog pops upon creation of the drawing document itself just because the titleblock\border is used in the sheets.

Solution:

Set SilentOperation to true (on Application object) before you create the document via the API. This will suppress the prompted entry dialog. Don't forget to revert the setting of SilentOperation after you are done.

Hi Curtis,

I took a look at the code written and tried inserting it in iLogic, unfortunately the code didn't work and gave me multiple errors which I do not know how to solve. Is the code too old to function with Inventor Professional 2023? Or won't it just work as an external rule in iLogic?

Is there a code that does the same but less older than this one and also would work as an external rule?

Edit: What does the code actually do? I was looking for a code that disabled the appearing of the dialiog box when creating a new drawing sheet.
