Parts lists

Hi guys,

Is there a way that we can get item numbering in BOM by letter instead of numbers. Like the revision table gives us an option either 'Alpha' or 'Numeric'.

Right now, we are manually typing the letters as shown in the image attached. There should be a better way than this.

Yes there is a much better way.

Just change your procedure..

The Inventor software uses numbers (and every other cad package in the world I'm sure).. Fix your mistake now and change to numbers like everyone else.

There is NO benefit to using letters over numbers.

I'm sure this is one of those silly situations where "we have always done it that way and it would take an act of god to change now"..

Well thats plain silly and is obviously costing time for NO benefit. Change now..

Thanks for your guys.

We have always used numbers in the BOM and letters in Revision Table. But this customer who we are working with uses letters in the BOM and their reason behind it is they want to avoid confusion between QTY and ITEM column while ordering parts. One of the ways would be to keep these columns separated by having Description or Part number in between them.

Is there a reason why they wouldn't give a option for naming item with letters just like with Rev Table.

But looks like we have to go the manual route and do a work around as you had suggested in your previous posts.

Thanks your suggestion. Actually we checked it if Solidworks would do a Alpha numeric BOM and it doesn't do too. The reason the customer was using Alphabets because that's the way it was done in AutoCAD and they carried the same practice over to Inventor. Finally pushed them to use Numeric BOM.
