Hi, I'm fairly new to Inventor. I've worked with 2-D (AutoCAD LT) for many years, and now I'm trying to switch to over to using Inventor. I'm teaching myself as I'm designing which may not be the best method, but I'm hoping I can make it work. Does anyone know of a good simple overview out there that explains the basics of all the various methods of assembling parts? Either a video or a book would be fine. I'm looking for something that explains where I would use projected geometry vs using derived parts for example. Once I have a good understanding of when and why I would do certain things, I can study each subject in more detail as I need to. If anyone understands what I'm looking for, please point me in the right direction. I don't expect anyone to take the time to try to explain everything to me because it would take too much time. I'm looking for a quick overview that explains how everything fits together so I can study things in the correct order and get up to speed as quickly as possible. By the way, I'm working on proprietary designs, so I can't share them, but I can say that I'm working with some weldments, some frames, some sheet metal parts, and many solid objects that will get machined during and after assembly. Thanks.

Turn off Adaptive before you do any projection.

Use constrain in sketch before dimension.

Use constrain that remove most degree of freedom first. In sketch and model.

ie Plane to Plane first, point to point last.

Hi, thanks for your detailed reply. I've watched many YouTube videos already, but it seems that most of the time they take quite a bit of time while not exactly answering my specific questions. I have thought about looking into paying for training and I may pursue that further. I think your suggestion about the built-in tutorials is a good one. I'm going to check that out next. FYI, I'm using Inventor 2024.

The video was not what I was looking for, so no, I did not "do it". That's why I didn't ask a lot of questions. As I said, I learned from it just like I learn from most of the videos I've seen so far. I'm still looking for an overview of all the different assembly techniques and why you would use one over another. Not specific instructions on one particular technique. There's plenty of that out there. Thank you anyway. Your video was very informative.
