Inventor Styles read only after migration

Hi,

Could someone please explain me why I'm not able to copy Style Library Collections from one style library to another with the 2016 Style Library Manager ?

After migrating my 2015 (custom) Style Libraries, I want to add new 2016 styles (lightning, scenes and stuff) to my libraries.

After migration however, I'm not able to do anything with the styles because the migrated library is read only.

I do this every year, with every new IV version, but now it doesn't seem to work anymore.

Maybe someone has any ideas

First thing I would do is check the folder permissions in Windows.

Check your Project File, is you Style set to Read-Write

Mine too..

It seems to be because its one or more of the files are marked "read only" in Windows explorer but no matter what I did I couldn't turn that off.

Check the folder permissions. Are you on a network - talk to IT?

I'm working locally... (backup to network each night)..

I have gotten a "style library corrupt" error everyone in a while but it goes away and never seems to cause a problem.(so far and other than this)

I have NO problems editing styles,etc... just can't use the Style library manager..

The Inventor dev team are currently investigating this problem. The only workarounds (I'm aware of) are:

manually move your prior styles xml files to your 2016 Design Data,

add the relevent sections from your xml files to the as-shipped files.

Or, if you still have 2015, you may also be able to export the custom styles to a styxml file from the Styles manager dialog & then import them in 2016 & then save to your 2016 styles library.

@ John, the permissions are okay. I have "played" with this a little but the problem stays.
I have given the folder with the migrated (2015) xml files the exact same permissions as the folder with the 2016 default files, which is editable in the Style Library Manager. No luck.
There are also no files marked "read only" in the folder.

@ blair, the project file is set to "read - write"

@ mcgyvr, I don't think this is the cause of the problem.

I tried it again with 2015 (from 2014 back-up) no problem.

I'm on this literally all day now and it's driving me nuts.
I really tried every possibility (cutting and pasting different folders and files) but nothing works

It's 9 pm now (on Friday, go figure) and I'm about to call it a day.
There are yellow and purple leprechauns running back and forth on top of my monitors, so it's time to stop.

Just want to add that i'm "suffering" from the same problem.
Used the style library manager to migrate my copy of the 2015 styles and after migrating it became "read only".

Any update on the dev team's progress?
The workaround seems tedious, so i'll try to hold off if there will be a fix soon...

Guys!

Stop working locally and go use the Vault, it fixed this problem for us aswell. Too much time is wasted by going back and set it to read/write etc. We couldn't find out what to do about it, we changed to Vault and it's gone.

There might be a solution for it, but it consumes so much time, and why work locally when you can use the Vault?

Autodesk, no problem.

I'm a small entrepreneur and my design work I do alone.

I work on a stand-alone workstation. I therefore have no need to use Vault

I'm working with Inventor for more than 10 year now and every year I update my style libraries with the new "functions" of the new release, using the style library manager (it comes with the software and that’s it's intended use)

For a decade it work fine ( I had my libraries updated in minutes) and now, when there's a glitch in the program the solution is: switch to Vault

I agree, if only it was that easy to switch to Vault... i'm still trying to convince my boss.

And such a "minor" issue definitely isn't a good enough reason to switch to vault.

In that regard, @ChrisMitchell01 any news yet?

We're now using 2016, but there's still some styles i need to update and i'm waiting for either a hotfix or a notice that it will take (a lot) longer.

I have no use for Vault either.. I'm the only Engineer (INV user)..

The added time to check-in/check-out,etc.. is not worth it for me...

Vault is nothing to do with the current issue of not being able to migrate custom styles...

A workaround has just been posted for the issue:

I can't download the xml file. I keep getting an error that says the zip file is invalid! This is so frustrating!

John,

It's probably your browser trying to read the xml file instead of downloading it. Any different if you right click & use Save as ?

The only difference in the updated xml file is that the (existing) 3 is changed to a 4 so you could easily just edit your existing file so that it shows:

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<StudioLighting Version="4"/>
