Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone knew how I would go about making a carbon nanotube in Autodesk Inventor 2016. I'm not really familar with this type of software, I have used Google Sketchup before, but only briefly. If anyone could point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated. I attached some pictures of carbon nanotubes below.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/53/Types_of_Carbon_Nanotubes.png

http://www.tasc-nt.or.jp/en/images/project/characteristic/img01.gif

Thank you!!!

Nope. Been here long enough to know what CADWhisperer is referring to (has happened previously here) and was wondering if that person had any knowledge of this type of assignment. If this is an assignment...if I were to reply - I would tend to only give them a worm or two to fish with...I wouldn't provide the whole fish to them so to speak.

Ok, so I have a problem, I looked at the way MechMachineMan went about creating the nanotube, but it won't let me select anything to pattern. I have a .iam file of a single graphene hexagonal unit already. So, then I went and created a .ipt file of a cylinder. Next, I created another assembly file and placed both components into the modeling area. For some reason when I go to circular pattern it will let me select the axis, but not the features to pattern. The actual hexagonal model, I made by creating a cylinder and then I attached a sphere to the end of it and saved it as an ipt file. Then I went in assembly, and copied it over 6 times until it shaped into a hexagon. What exactly am I doing wrong here and why won't it let me press OK?

Just a reminder. The graphene hexagon in a nanotube isn't a 2D hexagon. It's slightly crooked. So starting of by creating your basic 2D hexagon won't get you where you want.

The first thing that you need to know is the science of nanotubes themselves. Do the angles between all the covalent bonds remain identical even if they aren't located in the same 2d plane anymore? Does the graphene get stretched out somewhat in the direction of the tube itself?

Once you know exactly how your basic carbon hexagon works, it's a simple matter of creating half a hexagon (three atoms, three bonds) and patterning it.

Ok, so some one showed me how a simpler way to create the hexagons and the graphene sheets as a part file rather than in an assembly and I've run into another problem.
