Slow startup when opening a part for the first time in Inventor

Hi everyone,

I’m experiencing an issue with Autodesk Inventor where it takes about 30 seconds to open a part (.ipt) the first time after launching Inventor. Normally, it only takes a few seconds. If I close the part and open it again, the speed is normal.

This happens every time I start Inventor for the first time after a restart or a longer pause.

Has anyone experienced a similar issue or have suggestions for a solution?

Hi! This could be related to a few areas. Make sure all critical Windows updates are installed and the graphics driver is updated. Right-click on Inventor desktop icon -> Properties -> Compatibility -> check "Run as admin" -> click "Change High DPI settings" -> check both boxes.

Go to Windows Display settings -> select the recommended resolution and scale.

Please help answer the following questions.

1) Check your project settings -> Folder Options -> Design Data. Is it in a local folder or a network shared drive folder?

2) Where are the Inventor files stored?

3) If network is unplugged, does it work faster?

4) If the anti-virus tool or network control tool is disabled, does it work faster?

Apologies for the thread hijack - We have had the same opening pause issue on all workstations for a number of months which has been resolved by the following:

'Right-click on Inventor desktop icon -> Properties -> Compatibility -> check "Run as admin" -> click "Change High DPI settings" -> check both boxes.'

However, this causes a secondary issue - Whereby if you double click on any local Inventor file or from within the Vault application a new copy of Inventor opens. How does one apply the shortcut properties and also ensure any files are opened using the currently running Inventor?

My take on this

Inventor only loads additional modules and add-ins when they are needed. For example, the first IPT file opened each day will load the relevant part-related code and add-ins, while the first IDW will load the drawing-related components.

This behaviour has been consistent for many years — the first file of each type typically takes longer to open as those resources are being initialised.

The rationale is essentially:
"If you’re not working with drawings today, why waste time and memory loading the drawing modules?"

Do you have any add-ins ( 3rd party ) that need to be loaded?

Hi Matt

Your comments are understood but I beleive they are not relevant in my specific case. Our Inventor deployments are heavily customised at the XML level and also ALL Add-Ins that are not required for day-to-day working are set as unloaded by default.

This is not a 5-10 second pause but 30+ seconds on every Inventor launch across ALL Inventor workstations.

Hi Johnson

I've performed extensive testing and with all of the referenced registry keys.

It appears that as soon as 'Run as Administrator' is enabled secondary instances of Inventor will be spawned. This appears to have something to do with User Account Control.

This is 100% repeatable behaviour that I need to somehow resolve... We either have a long startup pause at present or cause mutiple instances of Inventor to be spawned as soon as Run as Administrator is enabled.

Hi Alan,

I cannot seem to reproduce the behavior on my machine. If it is UAC related, it may mean Inventor.exe is blocked from accessing certain files. I don't think Inventor can dictate the behavior. A few things to try. Please make sure all critical Windows updates, the latest graphics driver, and all the critical PC vendor updates are installed. Use Windows Disk Cleanup to remove cached files. Go to your network security/antivirus tool settings. Whitelist Inventor.exe and autodesk.com.
