Im not quite sure what happened, however, I had my brother (More experienced than I), evaluate the settings of inventor, he changed the settings of the hardware, along with some of the window settings, and somehow, it worked. Theres still a mysterious crash here and there if I press diagnostics, but as long as the program works, Im happy. Thank you!

Hello There,

So recently, I purchased a new laptop, a Lenovo Y700 Gaming laptop, that does infact reach and surpass the minimum requirements to run Inventor 2016. Upon opening a new part, a simple one part file, the graphics window was solid black, although all of the menu panels worked fine. What could this be?

Here is the Diagnostic information from the hardware tab in Inventor:

This Direct3D graphics driver is Microsoft WHQL certified

Open the Nvidia control panel from the main screen and make sure that Inventor is set to use the High Performance graphics card. This laptop has an Intel onboard graphics card along with the Nvidia card. By default the Intel card is used to increase battery life.

It should be in the Application section of the Nvida control panel. I had an AlienWare Mx17 that I had to change the settings on for Inventor, Showcase and Simulation Mechanical.

^^ yep..

You should ensure your intel driver is disabled and should be running this version driver for your 960m card..

Never assume a new computer has the latest (or even close to the newest) drivers installed on it..

Alright So,

I have made sure that my Nvidia Graphics card is in use, it is up to date, and everything you all recomended was done. However, still no dice. Im currently redownloading Inventor Just to check, and I'll post my updated diagnostics if needed.

What puzzles me is that even my schools CAD teacher couldnt figure out as to why my brand new laptop that meets the minimum requirement can't render the graphics window for one part.

Please let me know your feedback, thanks!

Kbschaar

Can you get Inventor to crash again if you check on the Diagnostic aspect of it and have the CER (Customer Error Report) dialog appear again?

If so do not close the CER but select view report detail. In the list of the 3 files there will be dmpuserinfo.xml or userdmpinfo.xml or something like that..

But go to your temp folder (usually C:\User\<username>\Appdata\local\temp) and find that same file. As a reminder APPDATA is a hidden folder and you may need to adjust your viewing settings. Open the XML file in notepad or XML editor and delete any personal information such as your serial #. Save and attach the file here so we can review it. All personal info is at the top of the XML file.
