This functionality works absolutely identically to SolidWorks unless you have changed some setting or are referencing some other sketch than the active sketch.

Also - just like SolidWorks if you click and drag from the circle first - the tangent will be applied.

Attach the file here that is giving you difficulty if you can't figure it out.

Hi All,

I'm new to inventor, thrown the towel in with solidworks, couldnt take anymore of their warped business sense and lack of support.

Anyway i'm just running through some of the youtube tutorials, while at a point where in 2d sketch i need to snap to a tangent, it has come to my attention that the only thing my cursor will snap to is the origin.

The green dot is missing!

I have obviously googled to try and find the answer but not having much look.

The closest i suspect ive come to finding the answer is here (http://www.trainingtutorial.com/TAT39_The_Green_Snap_Dot_is_Missing_in_Inventor.htm) , but the options it tells me to check are highlighted in to constrain drop down box are not present.

Any help wil be appreciated.

Regards

Will

Welcome to the community!

I'm not sure i fully understand your problem, but if you're trying to make a line tangent to a circle or radius by dragging off of it then you don't see a green dot.
Just click (hold) and drag with the cursor on the circle and the line should show a tangent icon.

Hi Neils,
Thanks for your time and patience.
The easiest way to clearly show what i am trying to say is, if you go to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ks-adpXBa6Y
at 5:37 he snaps to the top of the line the tothe tangent, i cant do this.
i can only snap to the origin in the sketch.
many thanks

Ok, so you don't get the green dot when moving the cursor over the endpoint of the straight line?

I still don't know if i fully understand, but can you check if you have the right settings for constrain inference:

Yep, just like SW but it still doesnt work.

Obviously i am trying to follow the video exactly to learn my way around, so i am puzzled as to why it works on the tutorial and not on my machine.

It was only downloaded in the product design suite 2 days ago and i have not played with it.

The ss is of my constraint settings box which is identical to the one posted.

Thanks again

1. You forgot to attach your *.ipt file here.

2. Have you installed Service Pack 1 and Update 1? (although these do not address your issue as described)

3. Can you install FREE Autodesk Screencast and record your steps? (It might already be installed if you go to your Add-ins tab in Inventor.

Of course you can always add the Tangent after-the-fact, just like in SolidWorks.

SolidWorks doesn't always get the tangent either, at least not at the speed that I work.
