Just trying out something and wanted to split a derived assembly and get Edit Parting Line Failed - Could not build this split. I have attached the files and a screencast. It's very simple assembly.

Here is the screencast URL

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/community/screencast/7e392f5b-6a4a-4c47-860d-ca1aa14d3f09

Oops, I didn't watch the Screencast.

Hmm. I got the same result as Rob, following his screencast. I didn't expect that.

But I could work around by using a different derive setting. (2016 file)

Thanks Walter,

Yes, I realise bringing in the assembly as seperate solids worked but was being lazy as I wanted to do a split and then move (single) body at the split. It is something to do with the tangent constraint in the assembly. If the parts in the assembly interfere then the split works correctly.

Very odd.....

Yes, same experience here. Overlap seems to be needed when using the first derive setting, no matter if tangent or mate constraint between botn parts.

One more test: I placed a small notching in Part1. So the contact zone between both parts became a surface instead of a line.

With surface contact no more problems.

Hi Robert,

This behavior is a limitation in Split tool. The cylinder and the frame have tangent constraint. After they are derived into an part, the edges become non-manifold (an edge shared by more than two faces). The Split command assumes this kind of body as multiple disjoint lumps. Unfortunately, the cutting tool has to intersect all lumps within a solid body. This implicit limitation makes the behavior very confusing. For your case, you might consider deriving the assembly as multiple solids. And then use Split command to cut it. Next, combine the cylinder and half frame back as one solid. Or, simply keep them separate bodies. We are aware of this limitation and we are trying to see if we can remove the limitation.

Many thanks!

Thanks Johnson,

That explains why the split works in some directions. I will use the workaround you have described if I come across it again,
