Form tool, is there a better way to draw this part?

So I am running into a small issue with the attached part. I can get my profile done for half of the tool, but when I try to do a combine after the circular pattern Inventor gives me the "attempted operation had problems trimming and discarding faces" error message. This leads me to ask is there a better way to draw this tool?

Check the sweep. Is that really how it should be? The center looks, funny.

Hi Jeremy,

The Boolean error is due to the fact that the edge at the center will become a non-manifold edge. This means the edge will be shared by more than two faces. Such condition isn't desirable in machining process. You may need to add some material in that area so that the edge does not become non-manifold.

I am aware that the center looks funny, that's why I posted asking if there is a better way to do this or if there is something I need to change in how I do the solid sweep. Hmm, just had a thought would a loft give a better visual representation. The best way I suppose would be to draw up a skeleton and patch in surfaces, poo now I need to try that even though I have already spent too much time on this as it is. Anyway, the .048in tall bit of weirdness in the center won't be there in the physical tool after it is ground, and what I do have is good enough as it conveys the design information our tool and cutter grinder needs to make the tool.

So, I redid the part using surfaces to create the end of the tool and I got something that looks better.

Well, for all that my new model looks better I can not dimension it in a drawing as the edges of the patched surface are not straight lines. So I guess my original question still stands, is there a better way to draw this?

Hi, I've remodeled the Form Tool based on the first part file posted. The main culprit has been the Sweep IMO. To fix this I've changed the profile and the path (3D-sketch) as well. The concern is whether the design intent is still there. Hope this helps you. The attached file is IV2024, which I cannot do much about at this point. Cheers, Marco

This will be a drill to do a finish contour on the bottom of a hole.

The attached part is a much better representation and where I called it good enough. I ended up doing the profile as a stitched surface and using that to trim the end of an extrusion. The only issue I ran into was in the idw, I had to trace the critical profile in a sketch in order to get straight lines I could dimension from as the edges left by the surface patches show up as arcs.

If I'm following you, then in the drawing you should just be able to find the part in the model browser > right click on the part > Get model sketches > Include Sketch 4, and then right click on lines you don't want and turn the visibility of those lines off...That way you didn't have to re-sketch the profile.
