topic "Update" does not update all components (Inventor 2016) in Inventor Forum

Does anyone else experience this bug in Inventor 2016? I click "Update" in my top level assembly, but the update button () does not turn to gray.

Initially I thought it was just a little display bug where the assembly DID update but the button didn't change. But then I noticed a part in my assembly actually NOT updating its position in response to a hole location I changed. I opened the sub-assembly containing the part, and the update icon was still yellow, so I clicked it and voila, the misbehaving part snapped to its proper location. I went back to my top assembly and hit "Update", and the icon finally turned gray indicating everything was up to date.

So apparently there's a bug where clicking "Update" on an assembly actually does not update all of the sub-assemblies it contains. This happens to me quite often in Inventor 2016. Has anyone else experienced this or might I need to try the painful process or re-installing?

Window 7 SP1

Inventor 2016 SP1 Build 10

PS: I can't upload a sample assembly. The assemblies this has happened to are usually quite large.

Are you using the Local Update or Global Update (select between them using the little down arrow to the right of the button)?

I never thought of that--I always just hit the main icon. I think I've always done a Local update.

I just tried doing a global update on my assembly and the bug still persits. Even after a global update, some of my sub-assemblies aren't updating and the update icon stays yellow.

Inventor has always had that issue on occasion..

I typically just use "rebuild all" but sometimes need to resort to closing and reopening the file..

Hi! The behavior you are describing here does not sound right. Normally Rebuild All should bring all components up-to-date. If an extra update is still required or update button does not go away, it means Inventor has trouble updating one or more components.Maybe, the target component in a different state that Inventor cannot properly update it.

Could you share the files with us? I can set up a secure account for you to upload it. Please send me an email (johnson.shiue@autodesk.com).

Many thanks!

I have seen this issue happen when I have a part derived from an assembly in a positional rep. I always have to go into the assembly and activate the positional rep in order for the update button to turn grey in the part.

@johnsonshiue: I've managed to strip one of our problem assemblies down to just a few parts. I'm attaching the P&G as a Zip folder. A few notes:

If you open the main assembly ("Update Bug Assembly.iam") you'll see that an update is required, but clicking the update button does nothing.

A Rebuild All WILL update the assembly. However, our actual assembly is too large to be doing a Rebuild All after every minor change. So that is not a solution.

If you open the sub-assembly "Pivot Bracket Assembly" and click Update, the assembly will update successfully. You can then return to the main assembly and hit Update and the button will finally gray out.

Turning off the Flexibility the sub-assembly "Barrel Assembly" will make the main assembly update correctly. So the bug may be tied to that. However, this is a bug because updates should not be affected by Flexibility, so turning off the Flexibility of our sub-assemblies is not a solution.

Turning off the adaptivity of Barrel Assembly.iam-->Barrel.ipt also fixes the update issue, but again, this is not a solution.

I'm thinking the problem has to do with the flexible Barrel Assembly containing an Adaptive part. But these are a completely separate assembly from the one that won't update, so that really shouldn't be a problem.

Evidently there's a bug where having flexible/adaptive components makes the Update command not actually update some sub-assemblies. If this bug could be diagnosed and fixed that would be great.

Hi! Many thanks for providing the example! You actually have already found out where the problem is. Adaptive and Flexible basically are mutually exclusive. When a subassembly is adaptive, it cannot be made flexible and vice versa. Another limitation is that Positional Representation does not work with Adaptive.

Another behavior I notice is that if you make "Pivot Bracket Assembly" flexible, the update will work correctly. It seems that Inventor has trouble accessing the degree of freedom to fully solve the constraint system. I do believe there is something wrong here. Could you help me understand how the assembly got into the situation? Can you reproduce the behavior after you make "Pivot Bracket Assembly" flexible?

Many thanks!
