Inventor 2015 very slow opening first file, but fast afterwards

Hi Everyone,

I've been using Autodesk Inventor 2015 for over a year now, and all of a sudden I am having speed issues with loading the FIRST document in a session. The issue is evident in two different ways:

1) If I start Inventor and click the "Open" button in the "Get Started" tab.

2) If I double click on an Inventor document (i.e. assembly, part, drawing)

Inventor seems to hang for about 30 seconds or so, but afterwards it's business as usual (aka everything is fast). If I start a new instance of Inventor, the problem repeats. I am currently working on developing add-ins for my company, thus I have to open and close Inventor many many many times each day, and this issue is killing my productivity.

No one else in my company is having the same issue.

All other commands/buttons work instantly, only the "Open" button causes issues, and only for the first time in a given instance of Inventor.

I've searched around online, and haven't found anyone having this exact issue. I've tried several things, including:

1) Got rid of the home "My Home" on start up

2) Disable any add-ins I don't use

3) I have "Enable Quick File Open" checked

Nothing has worked.

Computer specs are not the issue:

Processor: i5-4670K CPU @ 3.4GHz

Installed Memory: 16GB

In the resource monitor app, there is no evident shortage of resources.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions anyone could offer.

Well... on the first part it preloads any/all addins..

So maybe one of your addins is causing the issue or another is causing the issue..

In the bottom left of the screen you can typically see it "Loading Feature Catalog", "mold tools",etc...

I unloaded all my add-ins to see if that was causing the issue, but that made no difference. In the bottom left corner, it just says "For Help, press F1", and no other messages. In fact, during the initial doc loading, Inventor is completely unresposnive for the 30 seconds. Then the "Open" dialog pops up and everything is back to normal. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Do you have a network or standalone license? If you have a network license, that may attribute to some of your lag. Try borrowing if for short period of time to rule that out if you do.

I have a network licence. I just borrowed it as per your suggestion, and that did not help. Thanks for the suggestion.

Are all of your project and application paths set to local workspaces and libraries?

Check Design Data especially.

If you are using Nod32 antivirus I have seen slow down and lock up issues with that as well.

Try logging in on the PC as a different user and see if the problem persists.

Tried logging into my machine with a different user credentials, same problem.
Tried logging into another machine with my credentials, no issues.

A few updates on the issue:

1) Haven't mentioned that my machine is on an isolated network (i.e. not connected to the internet).

2) Tried fully wiping out all Autodesk software and doing a fresh install. The issue remains.

3) I timed how long Inventor hangs when pressing the "Open" icon. It is always consistently 22 seconds. Seems like it's trying to access something, and that has a timeout setting of 22 seconds.

4) Playing with Invnentor on other machines, I noticed that when you first press the "Open" button it takes about a 0.5s longer than if you press it subsequently. Does anyone know what causes that? seems that whatever process occurs at that time is what's causing my problem.

5) I looked at the app manager log, an the following two lines jumped out at me:

ERROR 2016-06-06T15:26:59.445 TID(4692) ClientStateMgr::replyError: error 99: Connection timed out
ERROR 2016-06-06T15:26:59.445 TID(4692) ClientStateMgr::onNetworkReplyFinished: error=99 Connection timed out

This doesn't occur on other machines. My IT guy (who is very good at what he does) has also been digging into this, and neither one of us have been able to pinpoint what the heck is going on.

I am basically a day or two away from wiping my entire system drive and doing a fresh install. Hopefully someone can enlighten me before that happens. Thanks again to everyone for taking the time to read and respond to this thread.

Have you tried connecting it to the internet?

Inventor uses a couple Chromium app addins that will hit the internet.

I know MyHome was one of them but you turned that one off. Autodesk 360 also contributes to this so maybe uninstall that completely.

I think the CIP data also trys to hit the internet for the Customer Involvment program.

Anymore infomration on this you should try to get the attention of one of the Product Managers, Developers, or someone on the ADN to see if they know more about which ones try to access the web during start up or during operation.

I´m an IT guy and also got this delay for my users.

And as I mentioned in this thread inventor is contacting an akamai server:

This connect is causing the delay when starting first "Open" dialog.

Inventor.exe is waiting 21 seconds for this connect. So please autodesk tell us how to disable this communication.

I would un-install the Akamai software. Possibly it's looking for any updates, not sure why as it's primarily used for downloading and installing of the software.

Never installed akamai - also checked services, registry and path for akamai components.

Possibly try going the other way and install the Akamai download manager from Autodesk. Perhaps it's looking for something that should have been installed.

Ok, so starting to zero in on the issue. I finally tried connecting my machine to the Internet, and of course, the problem goes away.

I don't have akamai installed (my IT guy took it out upon installation).

When I use TCPView, it looks like Inventor.exe is trying to access the internet (see screen shot below). The machines that don't have this issue, never get that process. There is obviously some sort of a flag somewhere that got flipped.

I think it's time to contact Autodesk. I will post if I find a solution.

I think I got a solution. Just tested it on a test machine and rolling it out atm.

Turn on Windows firewall for domain profile and add a rule to block inventor.exe (or acad.exe).

Akamai seems to be the second NSA...:
