All I know about UV mapping I learned using Maya and yes, it's necessary in order to apply textures to the model.

I never used inventor for game design before so I don't know much. Sry

So I have Autodesk Inventor 2017 and I have been modeling for a year. But now I'm starting to model for a game for my friend and he said it needs to be uv mapped. Does anyone know how to help me on that?

This is probably a bit old, but try to learn to model in Blender.

Unwrapping imported models from Inventor to Blender is next to impossible without some remeshing tools.

Inventor is, unfortunately, not the correct tool to be using for modeling game assets. It's based around solid objects, and neither polygon count nor flow is at all important. You'll see the drawbacks when you export to a neutral file format and load up the models in something like Blender or 3DS Max.

As for UV mapping, it's not really a thing in Inventor, and the models you create are not going to lend themselves at all to being unwrapped and UV'd with other software packages later.

Much as I hate to suggest anything other than Inventor, ever, for anything... you need the right tool for the right job, and for this job? You should start learning Max or Blender, followed by something like ZBrush for painting textures.
