Friday pictures 6-10-'16

A fine Friday everyone!

I didn't have time to make anything, so i'm just showing a quick raytrace of a part that i had to make this week.

It's one of the funniest/weirdest shapes i had to make in a while, it's not that complex but it has to be fixed to existing points that were just really oddly spaced...

I also had this crazy idea for Autodesk to add an image comparison slider to the forum functionality, as i wanted something to show the difference between different render modes.

If you think that could be a good idea then please add a vote.

And another reminder for anyone joining in:

Hi everyone,

I am currently modeling a jetty to make renders with our marine loading arms.

The whole "models look to clean" kept me busy experimenting with materials because absolutely nothing in our line of work (refineries, docks etc.) is clean.

Ended up blending with rust and bump mapping allot which seem to have a good effect (open the image in a new window to see the bumps).

Still not there but it's getting better!

I had no time to add a ocean from Realflow so used the standard Autodesk water material on a plane with noise.

did not know that it added a effect to underwater surfaces, looks pretty cool!

Looks pretty good overall... though the rusty chains and hooks look a little "flat"... not sure how to describe...

If you really want it to look dirty, maybe it's worth checking out plugins for it...
RichDirt is a quick find, not sure if it's updated to Max 2017 yet though.

It's too pricey for me as a hobbyist and we don't have a need for it at work, but you seem to do this a lot for your company so maybe it's worth something.

Yeah, they deserve a little more texture.

It's hard to find the right ratio sometimes.

I don't think the company will invest in a plugin as they are already very satisfied with what I create now, it's more my own judgement that keeps me going on and on about this...

I'll check out the plugins though, tanx!

Hope everyone has a great weekend.

I had a gifted neon artist repair one of my neon beer signs and we got to talking about her making a custom sign for my gameroom.

My wife and I adopt retired racing greyhounds, so I thought something along those lines would be ideal.

She said to sketch something up and she would look at it.

Well I haven't "sketched" anything really since I started using Inventor, so obviously the challenge was given.

Did quite a bit of research on bending glass tubes, and neon in general, and came up with this design.

Going to drop by her shop this afternoon on the way home to show her the design.

She is either going to be impressed with the effort, or think "what drugs is this guy taking?" LOL

Here's a raytrace of the completed design, along with a render of the sign lit.

Or offer you a side job.. I'm sure she would love being able to show a "concept" with detail like that to any of her customers..

One could even take a picture of the wall in their house where they want it and overlay your rendering on that background..

ROFL! yeah, looney is the right word...

But without art critics why would artists strive to make their work better?

Besides, the Area forum is scary... that's where people that actually make their living with 3DS Max and such hang out...

(and i am impressed with Frank's work, he has awesome projects)

The Fusion rendering engine is pretty good, which is annoying.
