Hello people, I recently downloaded Inventor and I am trying to make a threaded part with no succes. So everything seems fine I drew the part and build the 3D file. It look like this:

But when I can make the thread, it looks like it is making it but when I export it as an STL and I try to open it in my 3D printing software (or in any other software) the threaded surface is just not there. It is just a normal hole, it looks like this:

Hi,

By using the thread command Inventor will only show the thread on the surface and will not build the actual thread in the model.

This is done on purpose because the models will become very heavy if every thread was actually build in 3d.

So you have to model the 3d thread yourself.

There is also a good app which can build the thread for you though:

CoolOrange

I don't have any experience with 3d printing so I don't know if the app actually builds the thread correctly enough, but it sure looks that way.

Hope this is what you're after.

That's because these threads are just projected images.

But you could use this link and download the thread modeler add-in.

https://apps.autodesk.com/INVNTOR/en/Detail/Index?id=2540506896683021779&appLang=en&os=Win32_64

Thank you JDMather! problem solved for the 3D model! It worked! But I still
don't know why it doesn't work the other way (with the thread comman) so if
anybody find out please let me know.

Cheers

That's because the thread command only places a visual thread on the selected surface. It's just an image of a thread that is projected on that surface.

Zoom wayyyyyyyyyyyyy in on that cosmetic texture "thread".

Do you see any peaks and valleys for the thread like on your cut thread?

Attach your *.ipt file here.

Did you make the beginner mistake of wrong hole size when you did your real thread?

Also, since you are going to 3D print this - I recommend that you allow an extra bit of clearance.

Hey! problem solved!

I don't think that is necessary to leave some clearance as I am going to
use a metal threaded tube for the prototype, I just wanted to have a rail
to attach the tube. Thanks!
