I am sending the file with the part. I am embarrassed to send because it is such a simple piece. In the first sketch I used the shell command to hollow the part and added the rectangular pattern. I mirrored by feature to eliminate the rectangular pattern. The shell feature would not mirror so I separated the images in an attempt to pick on the faces of the mirrored image and use shell command. The error message I get says briefly "shell operation was unable to heal a gap resulting from the shell". Hopefully the file I have attached will be of some use to you. Thanks so much for your help with Autodesk products I have been able to get past many snags by using the solutions posted.

I am a student using Inventor 2017. I have used the mirror and shell commands with no problems. I mirrored a fairly complicated part that has been shelled. I understand that shell cannot be mirrored. I mirrored the part by Features and obtained a perfect mirror that was solid BUT when I attempted to apply shell to the mirrored part I get an error. Any suggestions ?

Are you doing this from a tutorial?

I would work a bit backwards and go and fix Sketch 13 in the Loft

From the start the Red Cross symbol is active

telling you that you have a problem

It has a few extra lines in it ... You could just make a rectangle and put .25 fillets on the end, versus drawing it line by line... you'd also a lot less point. Constrain it to the origin point .

The issue is you can't shell twice ...

You need to do it together

So what I did was:

1) Fixed Sketch 13

2) Moved the End of Part up to before the shell

3) Created a new plane, Mirrored it

4) Shelled both of them TOGETHER for this to work..

5) Moved the End of Part down

6) Fixed the Pattern

sorry for the bouncing around still getting my morning coffee in me

I noticed the Red Cross but could not figure out how to address it. I am working from problems in a textbook. I reworked the loft feature as you suggested and then mirrored and shell both halves together. I did not realize you could not shell twice. Also, I had not figured out the uses for End of Part. I began using Autocad a few years ago and I am still picking up tid-bits each time I use it. I am sure that once I begin using Inventor in the work place I will have a greater understanding and probably even more questions for you guys. Thanks again for your help
