Hello,

I'm encountering an issue using derived parts. Usually derived parts get updated automatically when the base component is getting modified.
In this case I modified the base part, but instead of instead of instantly making the change to the base part. Inventor requires me to update the derived parts. Has anyone else encountered this issue or something similar?

Is there a way to make sure an assembly and it's part are all up to date.
One solution I found would be to use rebuild all, but this updates part that haven't even changed, which causes issues with vault.

Thanks,

In my 20+ years of experience with Inventor, derived parts which are open always need to be updated to reflect changes in the base part, similar to how drawings behave. But they always show the lightning bolt icon indicating that the base part has changed. The same is true for assemblies, in my experience.

For example, if I am using multi-body master modeling and make a change to the master model, all the files dependent on that model will need to be updated. The good news is that clicking Update in the assembly will take care of updating all the components that need it. However, that assembly-level Update command will not update the drawings of components that change as a result.

Hi Sam,

No, not always and not any more. Since IV2020 there is some issue with the derived parts not getting updated after the base component is edited.

That Inventor's shortcoming has been discussed on the forum a few times already. Apparently the latest version of Inventor (2025) still has this problem.
The work around to this issue is to select the derived component, select "Edit", click OK in the popping up DB. After that the derived component gets updated.
It doesn't happen all of the time (not getting updated after the source file is edited) but it does happen frequently enough to get noted. Yet there is no logical explanation for such behavior, offered by the Inventor team. The end user has just to keep hi/her eyes open more carefully. That's all.

Cheers,

Igor.

@SBix26 wrote:

Sam B

Inventor Pro 2025.2.1 | Windows 11 Home 24H2

Yes Sam, it is there. All my work is based around Derived components. And I see this "phenomena" fairly regularly. Knowing about it helps me to avoid some unpleasant outcomes down the track. Such as wrong DXF file for laser cutting because derived component had a mind of its own and didn't update.

Cheers,

Igor.

@SBix26 wrote:

Hmm...

Hi chaps,

my 2 cents ::

I am also a heavy derrived part user in combination with multibody parts.

The multibody parts are great with simple AND complex designs, holepatterns and more so we do - theoretically - not have faulty sheetmetal parts at production time (hence the name c.a.d.) .

However it comes with a price : Too much time (according to me) is spent on checking / manually updating these derrived parts.

After copying a design even the derrive feature name (the filename shown of the derrived part) is not updated which makes all kind-of frustrating and keeps us more re-checking.

If parts are not updated they will suddenly at a later time; We still cannot understand how, when or why (restart inventor, restart workstation, ...... ??).

The rebuild function not always works like the intention of the functionname should be according to me (but i am not a logic computer and perhaps the name does imply something completely different)

final :

I realize that a part that is mirrored in a asembly has the same setup. So everyone can come across not or slow updating parts

regards,

Harold
