Hi,

I have a part file I would like to create a mold design for. I am having troubles opening the part file in the mold design layout. When I click on the plastic part icon and select my part file (.ipt) and hit open, the dialog box disappears and on the main window i see a small dialog box flash and no part is visible on the screen. I have checked mold metric option in the configure libraries and the Add Ins manager as well. For some reason Inventor is not opening the part file in the mold design module. What could be the reason for this? Any help/advise would be much appreciated.

Thank you!!

Arjun

Welcome to the community..

Share the part if possible and tell us what version of Inventor you're using along with any service packs/hot fixes that you applied.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for coming forward to help me in this regard. Unfortunately, I cannot share the part here, its confidential. But to give you a run down,
I received a part file with just surfaces in .igs format. I broke down the part into multiple sub parts by deleting faces and creating separate subparts. I added some thickness to it and saved it as a part file. For some reason, the mold layout tab will not let me open the sub parts. But if I open the complete part, then it lets me open.
I am using Inventor 2016 professional. I did not apply any hot fixes or any service packs.

Hi Mark,

Thank you for time and initiative. I figured out the problem. Since it was a 3rd party file and all I was doing was stitching and deleting the unnecessary faces and saving the new sub part file, the whole model was still present in the origin (extract files) which was confusing inventor. But when i went in the origin (extract files) and deleted all the unnecessary surfaces and re-saved the model, it worked.

Thank you,

Best,
Arjun

Hi Henry,

Thanks for reaching out to me. I figured the problem and found the respective solution. The mold design module is working just fine. I have a 3rd party igs file with just surfaces I received and I had to break down the part and call the subparts in the mold design module and work with them. What I was doing, I was deleting the unnecessary faces and stitching the remaining surfaces into one part and I was trying to open that saved file. But by doing so, the surface does not get deleted from the origin (Extract file thingy) So when I went into the origin and deleted the respective surfaces and re saved the sub-part, I was able to open the subparts into the mold design module.

Thanks for coming forward to helping me in this regard.

Best,
Arjun
