IDW cannot select part edge or corner

I have an assembly of 8020 framing. When I create a base and projected view of the assembly in an IDW inventor has a really hard time finding an edge or corner to attach a dimension to. I am pretty sure this is an old problem made worse buy the geometry of an 8020 frame that has many small linear groved features on each face. So in an IDW there are many lines to choose from.

I have experienced this in the past when there are a lot of lines present. Generally zooming out and hoping you can grab the correct edge works where zooming in for detail does not.

I tried playing with the filters but saw nothing that was helpful.

Going to hidden lines is somewhat better but not a solution either.

Different computers with different graphics cards seem to handle each instance differently.

Does anyone have a solution?

I am using Inventor Professional 2012

have you tried to hide the tangent edges in the drawing?

You say zooming in and grabbing the edge you want doesn't work? That's generally what you need to do when you have so many edges that close together. You can also get your cursor close and use the "select other" function until you see the edge you want highlighted.
