As a contract manufacturer, we receive files from another company in Europe. They are using vault. I set up a single user project when I receive the files. Due to differences in materials and tooling I have to modify the parts(sheet metal) to match the overall dimensions on the customer prints. Unfortunately the files I receive are using a lock file, which prevents me from permanently saving the changes. I have tried deleting this file after closing Inventor. The lock file keeps coming back. How do I remove the lock on these parts?

Hi rtyler,

Welcome to the forum.

I have checked your model within Inventor 2017 R2 (I don't have a older version running at the moment) and found a problem in your sheet metal part.

For your information, use the End of Folded in the browser to drag it up and go down step by step untill the problem comes up.

The problem in this model are the 2 cut features (Cut31 & Cut 32).

I have drag the End of Folded above Cut 31 so their was no problem in the model and made some changes and saving the file.

After closing and reopening it, the file my changes where their so I don't see any problem for saving changes.

Hopefully this was helpfull.

Good luck!!

Vault uses Windows file permissions to control access. The files are set to Read-Only unless you check them out.

Try using Windows Explorer to clear the Read-Only setting before you open the files with Inventor.

Hi rtyler,

You mentioned that a lock file prevented you from saving modeling changes. Did you mean that you were not able to save the file because of a lock file?

In Inventor, when a part is saved, a lock file is created. Once the save process is completed, the lock is released. If the file cannot be saved, you will receive the lockfile.lck error. And my guess is that this is what's happening on your machine.

This issue may occur when the file is in a protected project location. The lock file is created in the root folder associated with that location. The folder may be write protected or read-only. If this is the case, you will not be able to save the documents to that location.
