Hi, we have a surface model that we imported from another 3d CAD package. It really went to town creating the surfaces, and every single one shows up on the drawing I am doing.

Does anyone know how to remove most of these unnecessary lines? Even flat surfaces are split into at least 2 surfaces, as they are all based on 3 points max (ie. thousands or little triangles)

Inventor 2015 by the way

Regards

It looks like you are using a Mesh model, not a Solid or Surface.

What software did you use.

Maybe there is a way to convert it to a Solid in AutoCAD.

Can you attach the model or a simple sample for testing purposes.

We received a 3d CAD in the form of a DWG, which we imported into IV. First time we did this, we ended up with an assembly with 4000+ solid part files. So we tried again, creating a single part file only and ended up with what we have now.

Tried to attach it here, but even zipped its like 470mb. Attached the original 3d DWG instead

DWG was created with Advanced Steel.

I tried to Convert the Mesh to Solids but it doesn't work.

AutoCAD tells me 'Mesh not converted because it is not closed or it self-intersects.'

Sorry. I don't think I can help you with this problem.

Since it's a mesh and it seems to have many issues as far as open loops, and overlapping, etc., I would think he might be able to open the model in Inventor and edit the mesh/surfaces there.

The only issue is, how much needs to be fixed? It could be very time consuming, especially if you've never worked with mesh/surfacing.

mjc, I'd see if they can instead send you a STEP solid file as opposed to the mesh. Assuming Advanced Steel can do such (sorry, never worked with it).
