IPN views not updating Inventor 2017

I am having a recurring issue with IPN views in drawings, in that once I have created them once, if I then update the IPN file, it does not update in the drawing. I have tried all manner of solutions, and to be honest, am getting a little annoyed with it now (Especially as Inventor 2016 exploded views were such an improvement over previous versions, this seems like a massive backwards step, and completely unintuitive).

I have tried the following:

Sliding the timeline to the end

Changing view to associative

Supressing, then unsupressing the view

Deleting, then re-adding the view

Anyone with a foolproof soution to get it working?

Edit: I'm on SP3 too.

In IV2017 the Presentation changed completely. In the Presentation Browser there will be a snapshot of your Presentation. This Snap Shot is what gets used for your Drawing. If you make a change to the Presentation, you need to RMB on the desired Snap Shot in the Presentation Browser and select Update.

This new setup allows you to create multiple Snap Shots (Green Box) using the same presentation from different view rotations to zooming in on a particular section and creating new and additional snap shots. It has nothing to do with the lower slider play bar.

When you create your Views in your Drawing, you can then select which Snap Shot you wish to place and use for each view. You just need to remember to go back and refresh the desired Snap Shot.

Ok, I think I've figured it out.... (Thanks blair for showing me what I'm looking for)

The problem seems too stem from the fact you can't change the snapshot view in the IDW, it's locked. Therefore, to make a change to the IPN, rather than adding tweeks, you need to click edit on the snapshot view first, then add tweeks. Otherwise, you need to delete the exploded view, and add in the new exploded snapshot view.

User request: Can we have the option to go back to the 2016 IPN system please? I don't want to create videos, and this new version is adding complication for complications sake, taking longer.

It's as simple as RMB on the Snap Shot, make your changes and then select the big Green Check Mark on the Ribbon Menu and the Snap Shot is updated with your changes and any view reposition. Your drawing view will update with the changes.

Rotate your model around to the new designed view and position, select the "New Snap Shop View". Then go to your drawing, select the "Create New View", you will now have two Snap Shots that you can choose from for your.

Once you get the hang of it, you will like the changes. The ability to create a number of different views from the same IPN file is great.

I'm not sure I'm convinced I will yet...!

Another issue, create a variant and associated IPN, use manage to replace the exploded view (and IAM views), and hey presto. It disapears.

Great.

The problem I have is, generally speaking I don;t need more than one exploded view, and when I do, the old system of adding exploded views in worked absolutely fine. In fact, as I said before, 2016 was near perfect in it's IPN creation, very intuitive, and did exactly what I needed it to do. I realise that technology moves on (and Autodesk need to justify the small fortune we pay them every year), but this change is at the expense of usability, and makes the process take longer. Which, is a backwards step.

Since the IPN was released in Inventor, there hasn't been a single change to the module. In the mean time they developed Inventor Publisher which has the features now found in the current release of Inventor.

It took me a bit to get used to it even though I tested the Beta version.

So how come I cannot find this Snapshot views panel?

It seems to be missing.

I found it in the view tab. It was turned off fsr..idk

I guess I might as well be the first then 🙂 . This new format was a carry over from Inventor Publisher. This "fixed" snapshot was great feature within I-P. This allows you to do your explosion and create different views but from the same zoom point as well at to zoom in and from different angles. This can be done along the explosion process.

Yes, it takes a bit to get used to clicking the refresh icon for a given snapshot but I wouldn't go back.

Only been using Inventor since release 4, about 18 releases worth and yes, it took a bit to get used to at first.

Hi Mike,

I know you are unhappy and you might be frustrated. But, I do need to see an example of the defective behavior. The issue you are seeing may or may not be related to the original thread. Also, it could have been fixed. Without an example, there isn't much we can do.

Are you on Inventor 2017? Have you applied the latest update to Inventor 2017 (2017.4 followed by 2017.4.8)?

Thank you for your reply. Yes, now that I had to break away from the task at hand, took time and found this thread and read posts to learn the “tip and trick”, I was able to resume my task. But when under pressure to create and edit production dwgs.. QUICKLY, intent should be interpreted by the software to just update the view without the user having to search for “tips and tricks” to find a hidden status bar and moving the slider and all the other time consuming crap involved. Save the tips and tricks to activate stuff more complicated, NOT something that should be absolutely automatic, without ANY further distraction from the task at hand.

End of Rant.

Hi Mike,

No worries! I totally understand your pain. It is indeed frustrating when something is not working the way it is supposed to. Inventor as a software product has bugs in almost every corner. There is room for improvement for sure. Have you found a solution to the issue? Is it still not working? Could you share an example here?

yes, after uncovering the hidden scroll bar at the bottom and moving it to the right, then setting view to associative, then the view updated. why can't the software do this automatically? instead of having the user search forums for this "tip and trick" to execute an otherwise straightforward, simple task?

Hi! The only reason I could think of is possibly due to performance. If you have multiple snapshots on a large assembly, updating the views together may take a while. Also, being automated means any change in the assembly would propagate to the snapshots. I will work with the project team to see how we can change the behavior. But, I don't anticipate a quick fix unfortunately.

then the following message appears "You cannot change a shapshot view linked with the timeline. Break link to continue. Click Cancel to cancel the command" .....

make your changes

Can you add the instructions for what to do when this error message appears?
