Thanks Curtis

I still can't figure out how the material hatch pattern defaults work, every time I create a new one for wood, it vanishes.

(see -05.jpg)

I did however work out the hatch styles (see -04.jpg). This does allow me to change the properties of the hatch without

having to edit it. However I still have to edit it anyway to change colour.

Maybe this is one of the few cases where AutoCAD actually is better than Inventor!!.

Mike

Editing Hatch Patterns

When doing a sectional view in idw, the same hatch pattern at the same scale always appears.

If I want to change it, I have to do a hatch edit, on all instances I want to change.

1 of 2 things I would like to know if it can be done and if so how?

1. Can I "paint -( ie like matchprop in AutoCAD) the hatch pattern properties from

one hatch onto a pile of others, without having to do a separate hatch edit on each instance.

2. Is there another way around this. Say setting up different "hatch pattern Styles- ie named hatch

patterns with different scales, patterns, colours" that can be made current for use when a

     section view command is invoked

Any help appreciated.

Mike Kovacik

2d/3d AutoCAD & Inventor Draughtsman

Joburg, South Africa

Inventor 2016

Hi MikeKovacik4928,

In Inventor the best way to do this is to map the hatch pattern to the type of material and then when you hatch something that is a particular material it automatically uses the specified hatch pattern.

see these links:

http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/inventor-forum/hatch-pattern-per-material/m-p/3682122#M453022

I hope this helps.
Best of luck to you in all of your Inventor pursuits,
Curtis
http://inventortrenches.blogspot.com

Thanks

I see that. It changes colour of all hatches though, not just selected hatches.

I want to have my steel hatch in black, and my wood hatch in brown.

I have still haven't come up with a solution and am still changing the colour of my wood hatches,

each instance individually using hatch edit.

Surely a software as comprehensive as Inventor has a way of doing that.

Come on, all you Inventor boffins, around the world, one of you must have a way of doing it.

Michael Kovacik

AutoCAD 2d/3d & Inventor Draughtsman

Johannesburg

South Africa

Hi MikeKovacik4928,

Create two hatch layers (or as many as you need) one called Metal_Hatch one called Wood_Hatch, assign colors to those layers.

In the Styles Editor go to the Object Defaults "style". This controls which style and layer things are created with initially. Set your Section Hatch default to the one you use most often. Note there is a Sketch Hatch object type also. This is used when you manually create a hatch. You can set that to default to a style and layer different or the same as the Section Hatch as you see fit.

Now when you section an assembly that has steel and wood, they'll use the hatch pattern and layer set up in the standard based on the material (assuming this was done already), but they'll both land on the same layer. Simply choose the hatch you want to change, and then go to the Annotate tab and use the Layer pull down to place that hatch on the layer with the color you intend.

On one hand I think we would be justified in asking Autodesk to include color or layer as a setting in the hatch style or hatch material settings, but on the other, I don't really miss the psychedelic look that many AutoCAD drawings have.

If you think better support for hatch colors is something you'd like to see in Inventor, you can requtest it by creating an Idea post. Just be sure to link it to this page, and link this page to the idea post.

Share your ideas about how to improve Inventor with the Development Team:
http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/Inventor-IdeaStation/idb-p/v1232
