You are correct and I hate the difference too. It causes problems internally for us as well but there is a good reason.

We didn't add part view reps (PVR) until what 2013? 2014? The team that did it (I wasn't part of that team then) decided after much hand wringing that keeping the legacy behavior of how visibility worked in parts was more important than aligning PVR with AVR on that topic in particular.

The reason master is not locked is because we are trying to emulate the 14 or so years where visibility in parts was effectively a free for all.

In affect it was a "maintain behavior" decision.

Part View Representation VS. Assembly View Representation

I just noticed something when trying to tell someone about view reps and how they work. This may have already been covered, but a quick search didn't turn up anything. When I am working in an assembly in the "Master" VR and I turn on a workplane, when I save the assembly, Inventor will prompt me that the VR is locked. I get that and I know that it cant be changed.

However, when I am working in a part file (also in the master VR) and I turn on a workplane, when I save the file, I do not get the prompt telling me the current VR is locked. Why is that and why the inconsistency? I am sure there is an explanation.

Thanks,

I've wondered the same thing. It is very odd little inconsistency. It's ironic because the Master view rep in Parts has a lock next to it, but nothing is actually locked in any way. It's basically just like the "Default" view rep in Assemblies. That's why you don't get the prompt -- because it's actually NOT locked.

It might be nice if this could be fixed, so we can actually have a Master view rep in Parts that always shows everything, like we do in Assemblies. But it's been like this for so long, I'm not sure what would happen to all our existing Parts if it were fixed...... with the thousands of Parts who are set to "Master" but have certain Solid Bodies, work features, etc. turned off.... would those all suddenly be turned on in every assembly the Part appears in? That would be a nightmare...
