connect lines to make one line

Hello Chaps--

Made a mistake when posting this post because i lost the attachment

Here is the question

attached file y3.5 is a sketch that I made by mirroring the right hand side profile onto the left hand side.

Please open the sketch and you will see that the line along the base (150mm long) is seen by inventor

as 2 lines ( because it was created as a mirror) I would like to have inventor seeing this as one line

150mm long because as the sketch progresses i dont want to autoselect the wrong point if maybe it is near

an endpoint.

Is it possible to automatically make this change by selecting the sketch and giving a command that will

join all loose ends?

Personally, I would just not select that line, and then I would use extend to connect it afterwards.

I don't think there is a way to connect all lose ends, unless you choose extrude (or others) and click the red cross in the lower left corner. That will only light up if you have open areas in your sketch though

On another note. Love your signature. Of course there is no issues, when there isn't a system to have issues 😄

Change your original base line to construction type, and do not select it to mirror. After mirroring the other elements, add a new base line all the way across.

Hello @fredJME3H if you are going to use Mirror I would suggest at the very minimum to locate the part along the Origin. You can also Project Geometry of the Y Axis as a construction line to easily mirror upon.

A generic answer your question, use Trim(X) to delete one side then Extend (X then hold Shift). There isn't really a combine command for two collinear lines.

Here is a screencast showing how to relocate the geometry and add constraints. There are many ways to go about it, but the main result should be a symmetric part with minimal dimensions that is Fully Constrained.

thanks for the information- much appreciated-- however i seem to recall that

in the earlier versions that i used there was a command something like "convert to a polyline"

which would do what i needed.

is there a similar command in fusion or in autodesk 2018?

Hi Fred,

"Convert to a polyline" is a command in AutoCAD which is not available in Inventor yet.

How about create sketch block to bypass?

Think 3D !

If you have a symmetrical part there is no need to create a symmetrical sketch. Put the unique geometry along the symmetry axis / reference plane (there might be more than one ! ). Extrude. Mirror the body. Inventor will "eat" the seams between all aligning faces, which is the 3D-equivalent of what you want the sketch to do.

@fredJME3H there are a few ways to print, are you wanting to print out certain portions of the screencast ?

You could use Ctrl + PrntScrn and paste into MSPaint or use the Snipping Tool to capture moments of the video and save them quickly.

If you are just wanting the forum thread posts:

Ctrl + P
RMB anywhere on the white space > Print...
Go to the file/hamburger menu and select Print...
