Hello everyone,

I have a sub assembly of around 30 parts that will be placed in other main assemblies.

After some tuning, the BOM Structure of the sub assembly is exactly the way it is needed.

Although different in order when comparing to its Model Data List.

When the sub assembly is placed into any main assembly, the order of its parts changes within the BOM of the main assembly.

It assumes the order of the Model Data List. I´m not aware of another solution either then changing the order once again.

So my question is:

- is there a way to change the order of the Model Data of an assembly?

- or is there a way to make the main assembly assume the manually adjusted BOM structure of the sub assembly instead of the Model Data List?

- or is there another solution? 🙂

Best Regards,

Francisco Vaz Cerqueira

Hello Curtis,

thank you for the link but unfortunately it wouldn´t work in my situation.

First reason being that same parts are used in different assemblies in different positions. So the use of the part number for the ordering is not possible.

Probably this happens in other situations too and not mine only.

Second reason is that, here in our company, the part number is exactly the same as the File Name. It is done in this way so that the renaming in the Design Assistant tool is much easier.

A solution could be easily found for the second reason. I can´t find one for the first reason though.

I must say that it is pretty unbelievable that Inventor does not give the option to change the order of the model Data. At least so it seems.

It would solve any problems of this kind.

Is there a way to reorder it using iLogic?

Best Regards,

fce

Can you please verify that that link describes your issue but the workaround does not resolve your issue:

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/inventor-products/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Sorting-BOM-in-subassembly-not-respected-in-top-assembly.html

If this is describing your issue, then I would ask that you vote for this Inventor Idea:

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/inventor-ideas/parts-list-and-bom-improvements/idi-p/3823228?nobounce=

Please share this with your colleagues and also ask them to share.

The faster this rises to the top, the sooner we can convince the Inventor development staff to address this issue.

Thank you we are sorry this is not working for your desired workflow.

Hello Bob Holland,

the first link describes exactly the issue! But this workaround does not solve the issue if same parts are used in different assemblies and if content center parts are used. The part number of Content center parts can´t be changed.

The third issue in the second link describes the issue as well. I have posted there in order to raise some awareness for this situation.

This problem would be easily solved by allowing the user to change the order of the Model Data list.

One last question though: is there really no way to change the order of the Model Data with iLogic?

I´m just not aware of which commands are used to reach these kind of values.

Best Regards,

fce

Hi fce,

Unless I'm misunderstanding, the link to the knowledge network article that bob.holland and I linked to is not suggesting that part numbers be changed. It is suggesting that you use the renumber and sort tools. This only changes the item numbers in the assembly BOM, and nothing in the component files.

I hope this helps.
Best of luck to you in all of your Inventor pursuits,
Curtis
http://inventortrenches.blogspot.com

Hi Curtis,

I might be the one misunderstanding 🙂 In the link that you´ve sent and as far as I understood, the method is to use the Part Number to sort all the parts (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3...) and then renumber the whole sequence. But the Part Number is a property of the part itself. If it is a content center part, I believe that I can´t change this property. In the suggested method the property "Part Number" has to be edited, if the sequence of the parts needs to be changed or the "Part Number" is actually not the desired one in the first place.

Another situation is if I have the same part in 2 or more different assemblies and consequently in 2 or more different positions. It would even cause this part to merge with another, since Inventor assumes that parts with the same "Part Number" are the same in the BOM.

Best Regards,

fce

But the Part Number is a property of the part itself. Correct, but we're not changing the part number, just using it to sort. If it is a content center part, I believe that I can´t change this property. In the suggested method the property "Part Number" has to be edited, (No, we shouldn't need to change the part number property. The Renumber button changes the Item Number, which resides in the assembly) if the sequence of the parts needs to be changed or the "Part Number" is actually not the desired one in the first place.

It would even cause this part to merge with another, since Inventor assumes that parts with the same "Part Number" are the same in the BOM. Again, we're changing the item number not the part number, and the item number is in the assembly (part of the BOM properties) so the components are not being changed. So you can have part called 123-456.ipt in Assembly1.iam that is item 12, and that same pat is used in Assembly2.iam and is item 15.

Hi! As I mentioned earlier, the Model Data tab is like raw data. The reordering is probably a consistent UI behavior, while it does not persist. I can check with the project team. But, I am not aware of a plan to persist the ordering in this regard.
