How do I stop Inventor from adding unwanted sketch lines?

Hi there,

I'm Les, I'm new to Autodesk Inventor and also this forum, so please bare with me. I'm drawing up a ceiling luminaire body and would like to work out how to stop Inventor from adding unwanted sketch lines to a sketch because they are playing havoc when trying to extrude the intended sketch profiles; as highlighted in red in the screenshot below - the remaining longer lines are being added automatically (half of the time without me realising). Please advise how I should go about stopping this from happening in the future.

Welcome to Inventor Forum.

From Go to Options ---> Skitch.

Deselect this two options.

What version of Inventor are you using ?

Also can you share the part ...We can make a quick screencast for you to help show you ....

but as latrach.fouad said ... turn off the projection options you don't need

Hi buddy, sounds daft but where do I find the "I" button in the programme?

same thing is here.. over the years/versions the "I" has come and gone..

tools..application options..sketch tab..

Thank you everyone for your support so far! I have since unchecked the recommended check boxes, which does work, but now I have the problem that my cursor doesn't snap to the lines at the edges of the model which is arguably just as much of an issue. is there a way to solve this anyone?

Project Geometry edges that you really need (Convert Entities in SolidWorks).

Use the Project Geometry tool to add the reference geometry you need to your sketch. Its like a limited version of the Select Reference tool in Creo sketches.

I don't like projecting all the face geometry into a sketch because it may break in the future. I only project what I need for that specific sketch.

There is, however, a known bug that will sometimes arbitrarily add random arc segments to a sketch- this has been the case since at least the 2015 version. It's annoying, but there doesn't seem to be a way to fix it, and it is totally random.

I think you're referring to an intended feature, where you can click and hold the mouse while dragging after drawing a line to draw an arc.

And project edges as "construction". I heard it would be default in future versions but I cannot check this before we upgrade. Anyway, construction geometry is used to constrain the sketches you make but is never used to actually build features. Which is the reliable way of building features. Also remember that adding dimensions will automatically project the edges you select.
