DXF import/export issues

So I have tried on numerous occasions to import DXFs & have as yet been unable to import ANY DXFs as Inventor just freezes & I have to force a shut down.

Considering that DXF is an Autodesk format I find this frankly bizzare. It's a file format used by Pro's & Makers alike so its even weirder that Inventor should make such a mess out of this. In addition I have also found that the DXF exporter is also badly broken as it adds extra lines to loops & really struggles with poly-lines!

In all seriousness if Inventor is supposed to be contending with the likes of SolidWorks then you have a long way to go (I wont even start on the horrendous spline control issues).

Version of Inventor?

Have you uninstalled and reinstalled DWG True View?

How about all updates/service packs for your version of Inventor..

There was a "bug" a little while back where Inventor would just sit there frozen (actually waiting for you to respond to a prompt in a background dialog box) and thus it would seem you couldn't import them..

Upgrading the version of DWG True View solved that..

can you post a dxf file for others to try if you have done the above and its still not working?

Just uninstall the current version.. Install the new version and restart your computer..

In general Inventor and Solidworks are very similar and compete.. Both are quite capable and yes solidworks does some things better than Inventor and the opposite is also true.. But they can/do function differently in certain aspects but "long way to go"... certainly not true.

If you would like to post specific examples,etc.. of the issues you have with DXF export too someone can look at that and see whats going on.. But broad/generalized statements don't usually get "problems" fixed.. All software has bugs of one sort or another... Dang humans and their lack of coding perfection..

Please excuse me, my comments were born of frustration, you quite right they're not helpful.

It was DWG True View & it works fine after a reinstall.

@Anonymous Don't worry.. We all get that way sometimes.. Frustration can bring out the "worst" in all of us..

Glad that the reinstallation of DWG True View got you back and running again..

To add to what @mcgyvr said, in my experience it's often the case that you don't have to reinstall DWG TrueView. You just have to actually open it once before trying to import a DWG into Inventor.

I think there is something that doesn't initialize properly until you actually run the viewer for the first time, and that causes the import in Inventor to freeze up.
