Hi! The first thing to check is to look at the template path set in your project file. Start Inventor -> Project -> Folder Options -> Templates. By default, it should point to public folder like "C:\Users\Public\Documents\Autodesk\Inventor 2018\Design Data\Templates\." Where is it pointed to right now?

Does the folder still exist? Does it point to the template folder belonging to prior release or newer release?

Many thanks!

missing template file / revisiting foundations of inventor

Hi all,

So, I'm currently at a stage where I want to test a printer and need to cut down a body into smaller parts to fit the printer dimensions. For those who have helped in this project so far, I've still got a few things to revisit but, I can perfect the CAD work whilst a mould is being hand crafted from a printed version of this body.

At the moment, I'm unable to make components because inventor reports there is a missing template file. In researching this I've come across two threads, here and here. In exploring Inventor I was able to come across something which suggested a file was removed with after a folder was deleted but I can't work out what I pressed now to write up the exact details. Anyway, the corner that I think I've painted myself into is as follows; I use Google Drive to back up important files and all of my Inventor related work lives in a Google Drive folder. As I'm learning the ins and outs of Inventor, I'm discovering that there are multitudinous files both related to parts for assemblies I'm making and a lot of background files like the template that I'm now missing. In trying to keep the many files and folders organised, things are sometimes renamed, moved or removed (for instance, I have a folder of 'parts' that fit into my assemblies, but are not in the assembly folder. Inventor wants to know why on earth not and needs me to link to all the parts when opening an assembly). I've assumed that the most important files are the part files that I've been building. Between not allowing Inventor to manage the files and my own fastidious 'dusting', anything else has been waywardly 'incinerated'.

So, I've two questions - what are the fundamental files that I need to look after and how are they structured in folder trees? A link to how Inventor manages projects for me to read up on would be great. I need to become more aware of how Inventor structures part and assembly related projects.

Secondly... how do I un-balls up the balls-up??

I see; the assembly project .ipj is in a 'root' folder I created in Google Drive, I can see that file now having looked at the inventor homepage projects location and the file exists in the folder. Default, defaults to Inventor's Windows folder. I don't know how to check release date, but I've only ever had Inventor 2017...

I may have resolved this. I found a thread that suggested making a new part, saving it and then going back to the original file. Having followed that advise, Inventor has not reported that no template could be found and I have now been able to make component. If the problem arises again I'll revive the thread.

Cheers

Check your project file.

What do you have for Templates folder?
